Resident Testimonials

Read what Overlook Medical Center's current family medicine residents have to say about themselves and their experiences:

“I grew up right here in northern New Jersey. Moving forward from high school I attended The College of New Jersey for my undergraduate education. Upon completion of my bachelor’s degree in biology I entered the work force as a chemist designing fragrances. Although I enjoyed my career, I had always known that I wanted to become a physician and I transitioned myself from the work force back to school, enrolling at Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine. My time at Rowan was particularly marked by the focus on the “osteopathic approach,” which was reinforced in my education rigorously. When it came time to take the next step in my medical career, I searched for a residency program that would train me not only in traditional medicine, however also nurture the osteopathic skills I had refined all those years at Rowan. Overlook’s family medicine program was ideal for me in that it not only offered these things, but it was also very local to where I’ve lived my whole life. Coming to Overlook, I was able to stay local and also look forward to exceptional training.” – Xander Arwand, DO, PGY1

“I was raised in Cherry Hill, NJ, and earned my BS from Fordham University and my DO degree from UMDNJ-SOM, now Rowan-SOM. Originally, I was looking for a dual family medicine residency program in the Northeast. What drew me to Overlook was a combination of the amazing people and the frequent learning opportunities made available, like noon conferences and procedure workshops. I love that there is a lot of interaction among residents of all three years. The support I have gotten as an intern from my colleagues is unparalleled. In my spare time, I enjoy playing violin and soccer.” – Kimberly Barnum, DO, PGY2

"It is too difficult to mention all of the strengths of the Overlook Family Medicine in one blurb, so I will choose to focus on the people that make it up. Whether it be office staff, faculty physicians, or co-residents, my day is made better by interacting with these wonderful people. There is a true sense of community here at Overlook Family Medicine, and everyone pitches in to create a one of a kind learning environment. I am very glad to have chosen this program, and look forward to the day where I can put into practice all I've learned." – Charles Becker, MD, PGY1

“My path to medicine started with Yale University for undergraduate and New York Medical College for medical school. My broad interests in women's health, geriatrics and love of procedures made family medicine the perfect choice for me while the feeling of family and community, support from the staff and wide array of opportunities makes Overlook the perfect residency program. In my free time, I love to bake and spend time with family and friends.” – Kledia Blloshmi, MD, PGY3

“Growing up in a large family, I've always appreciated the impact family dynamic can have on multiple facets of life, including health. I chose Overlook Family Medicine because I was looking for a community-based university-affiliated residency program in which I was certain I would have opportunities for growth, leadership, incentive and motivation. More important, I wanted a place in which I felt comfortable, respected and needed. To top it off, there are many approachable attendings, faculty and ancillary staff as well as friendly smiles greeting me on a daily basis from the concierge to the security.” – Simone Douge, MD, PGY3

“I grew up in the suburbs of New York, studied chemistry at Iona College, and attended Stony Brook School of Medicine. Participating in the couples match, I applied and interviewed very broadly but knew that I wanted to remain close to family. It was my interview day that clearly set this program apart from others, a combination of the faculty and residents, patient population, office space, procedure exposure, and location. I knew by matching at Overlook I would gain the skills necessary to be a great family physician. In my spare time, I enjoy catching up with friends and family, hiking, cycling and indoor rock climbing.” – Nick Florio, MD, PGY1

"I grew up in New Jersey, went to college in Connecticut at Wesleyan, and attended medical school at Einstein in the Bronx. I chose family medicine for the continuity of care and holistic approach of the specialty. The supportive environment at Overlook provides innumerable opportunities to learn and grow as a physician, the faculty and staff are beyond friendly, and the resources of the program are immense. It doesn't hurt that Summit has a direct train to NYC and easy access to hiking in western NJ. I couldn't be happier with my choice of Overlook for residency training." – Samuel Friedman, MD, PGY2

“I am originally from Pennsylvania and went to both undergraduate and medical school in Philadelphia. I decided to make the move to become a Jersey girl almost immediately after my interview at Overlook. I found everyone to be so inviting and friendly! It was a perfect fit for me. On my time off I like to stay active by running, which balances out my love for food and trying out new restaurants.” – Alyssa Hernandez, MD, PGY3

“I was born and raised in Texas before moving to New Jersey to start my residency program. I went to Baylor University for my undergraduate studies (Sic ‘em Bears) and then went to University of North Texas Health Science Center for medical school. Moving here, although hard, was made much easier by my wonderful co-residents. I chose this program because of the supportive staff and the numerous opportunities it provided for me to learn and grow not just as a physician but also as a compassionate and caring person. Residency is hard, no matter where you go, but it is so much better when you love where you work and you feel genuinely cared for by the people you work with.” – Lauren Im, DO, PGY1

“Originally from India but raised in Queens, I am a New Yorker at heart. I graduated from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and am excited to be in New Jersey. Primary Care has been my calling for as long as I can remember and the Overlook Family Medicine Residency has rewarded me with great experiences and learning opportunities. I like to travel when I can, and hope to make it around the world. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, catching up with friends and family and exploring NYC.” – Sejal Jain, DO, PGY2

“I am originally from Philadelphia. I studied French as an undergraduate at Ursinus College, got a master’s degree in biomedical sciences at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, worked at the National Institutes of Health, and then I pursued both my MD and PhD in microbiology at Howard University. Having been exposed to international medicine and healthcare in urban settings, I was interested in a supportive, community focused program with a strong behavioral health component. I found it at Overlook! Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with friends and family.” – Christina Johnson, MD, PGY3

“I am originally from Staten Island, NY, and after attending medical school in Florida I knew it was important for me to be closest to home where my family and friends currently reside. Aside from proximity to home, I was looking for a program with friendly, happy, supportive members and ample opportunities to explore my interests namely sports medicine and global health. Overlook was the perfect match for me and my educational goals. In my spare time I like visiting family and friends, exercising, watching football and hockey, and reading a great book for leisure.” – Kristen Lafferty, DO, PGY1

“I grew up in New Jersey, did my undergraduate at Rutgers University, and went on to do medical school at SUNY Downstate. I chose Overlook because it is a great hospital and because the people I met were down to earth, intelligent, and passionate about family medicine. I enjoy all aspects of family medicine, with special interests in women’s health, dermatology, and procedures. I like to spend my time off exploring NYC, trying new restaurants, and traveling.” – Vida Lee, MD, PGY2

“I’m a proud Rowan SOM (formerly UMDNJ SOM) graduate who was born and raised in NJ. My interest in osteopathic manipulative medicine and primary care lead me to the diverse world of family medicine. When applying for residency, I wanted a friendly, supportive program that would provide me with plenty of experience. Fortunately, I have found all of that and more at Overlook! Outside of medicine, I like to play softball, try new restaurants, hang out with my friends and family and play the occasional video game.” – Jamie Moy, DO, PGY2

“After being born and raised in New Jersey and completing medical school in West Virginia, I was excited to get back to New Jersey for residency. I chose Overlook because I knew that it was a place where I would receive an excellent education and also be happy in the process. When I'm not at work I like to explore nearby towns and check out Broadway shows.” – Amanda Norwood, DO, PGY2

“I grew up on Long Island, attended college at the University of Pittsburgh, and medical school at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem. I am drawn to the depth and breadth of knowledge and practice in family medicine. What impressed me about Overlook Family Medicine was the autonomy residents are given over their patients from the get-go. We learn to take ownership of our decision making while under the guidance of constant support from amazing faculty and seniors. In addition, just as a family physician individualizes care to each patient, OFM individualizes training to each resident, allowing for areas of leadership and personal development where each of our interests lie. There is a true sense of family here.” – Gabriella Rozenberg, DO, PGY1

“I was born and raised in NY, to a tight-knit Haitian family. After I moved to NJ for college at Princeton, I ended up staying for New Jersey Medical School and now residency in Summit! So I guess I'm well on my way to becoming a Jersey girl. My professional interests include pediatrics and mental health, and how the dynamics of a family affect the physical and mental health of each family member. I am so excited to be pursuing these interests here at Overlook.” – Emmanuelle Ruocco, MD, PGY3

“My academic career started at Villanova University, where I majored in Italian studies and pre-medicine. I then received my medical degree from Rowan-SOM (previously known as UMDNJ-SOM). Originally from Bernardsville, NJ, I am excited to be back in North Jersey! In addition to primary care, I have a special interest in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. In my spare time I enjoy drawing, trying new restaurants and spending time with my friends and family.” – Maria Tempera, DO, PGY3

“I went from being an Orange (Syracuse University) to a Buckeye (Ohio State) and finally made my journey home to NJ. I am a born and raised Jersey girl from East Orange who enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading and trying new foods. I am a product of two Jamaican parents who both emphasized the importance of community, dedication, and hard work. Why did I choose Overlook? I was looking for a program with core values that intertwined with my own including community, compassion, and collaboration. Fortunately, I was able to find that at Overlook. It is a community program with university affiliation making the access to opportunities endless. Additionally, it serves a diverse community, particularly that of the underserved for which my passion lies. Lastly, the faculty, staff, and fellow residents are so supportive of one another and go above and beyond to assure their patients get the best care they deserve. When I look back, I am so glad I chose Overlook and that they chose me because not only am I close to home --  which has its benefits (good home cooking), but now I have new members to add to my family.” – Theresa Thomas, MD, PGY2

“I grew up in San Diego, California, earned my bachelor degree at UCSD, and moved to Manhattan to attend Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. I was convinced that Overlook was the right fit for me as soon as I interviewed here. No other program was filled with such supportive faculty and amazing educational opportunities. Along with primary care, I am very interested in pursuing a sports medicine fellowship. In my spare time, I love to explore Manhattan and try new restaurants. I truly could not be any happier with my choice to continue my medical training at Overlook!” – Katherine Triplett, DO, PGY1

“I was born in Russia and grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I graduated from NYIT/NYCOM's seven-year combined BS/DO program in 2014. I have a strong interest in sports medicine and am looking to continue my training at Overlook after my family medicine residency. So far, this program has exceeded many of my expectations as to how a program should be run. I consider myself lucky to be involved with such a friendly, talented and hard-working group of individuals. I look forward to the remaining year of my training here! – Mikhail "Mike" Varshavski, DO, PGY3
