Maternal-fetal medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of expectant mothers and their unborn babies. Maternal-fetal medicine physicians, also called perinatologists, are obstetricians who specialize in providing care for women with normal pregnancies and those with a high risk of problems during their pregnancy.
If you are referred to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist by your obstetrician, the two will work together to develop your care plan. Though you may have several appointments with your maternal-fetal medicine specialist during your pregnancy, your own obstetrician will continue to manage the pregnancy and deliver the baby. The maternal-fetal medicine specialist is usually not present at delivery, but is available for consultation as needed.
The specialists at Atlantic Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Morristown and Overlook medical centers offer services including prenatal testing, diagnostic services and first trimester ultrasound screenings.
