Mammography
Mammography uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts and aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women. At Overlook Imaging, we offer:
- Digital mammography – uses electrical signals to produce an image of the inner breast tissue
- Computer-aided detection (CAD) – highlights abnormal areas of density, mass, or calcification in breasts that may indicate the presence of cancer
Preparing for a Mammography at Overlook Imaging
- Before scheduling a mammogram, discuss any problems in your breasts with your doctor and inform him or her of any prior surgeries, hormone use and family or personal history of breast cancer.
- Try to schedule your mammogram one week after your period. Do not schedule your mammogram for the week before your period if your breasts are usually tender during this time.
- Obtain any prior mammograms and bring them with you on the day of your exam.
- Inform your doctor or the technologist if there is any possibility that you are pregnant or are breastfeeding.
- Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. These can appear on the mammogram as calcium spots.
- Describe any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist performing the exam.
Mammography Results
Overlook Imaging’s radiologists are experts in supervising and interpreting radiology examinations. They will analyze your mammography and send a signed report to your primary care physician or the physician who referred you for the exam. He or she will discuss the results with you. You will also be notified by mail of the results of your mammography within 30 days of your exam.Mammography is available at Overlook Imaging locations, including Overlook Medical Center’s Radiology Department and Union.
