Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a type of nuclear medicine imaging that measures important body functions, such as blood flow, oxygen use, and sugar (glucose) metabolism, to help doctors evaluate how well organs and tissues are functioning.
Computed tomography (CT), sometimes called CAT scanning, is a noninvasive, painless x-ray procedure that obtains cross-sectional images of body parts that cannot be seen on a standard x-ray.
At Overlook Imaging, PET and CT scans are combined into one comprehensive image, allowing physicians to quickly and more accurately identify cancer, heart disease and brain disorders.
Preparing for a PET or PET/CT Scan at Overlook Imaging
- You may be asked to wear a gown during the exam or you may be allowed to wear your own clothing.
- Women should inform their physician or technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant or if they are breastfeeding.
- Leave metal objects including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures and hairpins at home or remove them prior to your exam; you may also be asked to remove hearing aids.
PET/CT Scan Results
Overlook Imaging’s radiologists are experts in supervising and interpreting radiology examinations. They will analyze your PET/CT images and send a signed report to your primary care physician or the physician who referred you for the exam.
