The Institute for Rheumatic and Autoimmune Diseases (IRAD) at Overlook Medical Center features a team of highly trained, board-certified rheumatologists to diagnose, treat and manage rheumatic and autoimmune diseases so patients can live their lives to the fullest.
Rheumatic Diseases
The rheumatic diseases are a group of more than 100 disorders that cause arthritis and other painful conditions of the muscles, bones and other tissues. While more than half of all people aged 65 and older have some form of arthritis, these conditions can affect young and old alike – from 2 to 92. Some rheumatic diseases are very serious, and they’re often difficult to diagnose and treat, but many appear in mild form and respond extremely well to treatment.
Autoimmune Diseases
Autoimmune diseases refer to problems with the immune system’s reactions to an individual’s own tissues. In an autoimmune reaction, antibodies or immune cells can attack the body’s own healthy tissues by mistake, causing damage or loss of function. Autoimmune diseases can affect almost any part of the body, including the heart, brain, nerves, muscles, skin, eyes, joints, lungs, kidneys, glands, the digestive tract and blood vessels.
