Robotic-Arm Assisted Partial Knee Replacement

When osteoarthritis causes joint degeneration in one or two areas of the knee, a partial knee replacement may be prescribed to alleviate pain and improve function. At Overlook Medical Center, we use the Mako™ Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System for these procedures, which allows our surgeons to only replace the damaged sections of the knee, while saving the surrounding healthy bone and ligaments.

During robotic-arm assisted partial knee replacement, a computed tomography (CT) scan of the knee is used to create a virtual 3D model of the patient’s individual anatomy. The cutting-edge Mako Technology uses this information to guide the surgeon during the procedure, so he is able to clearly identify the diseased areas of the bone and preserve healthy tissue. Adjustments to the treatment plan can be made throughout the surgery as needed thanks to the assistance of the robot.

After the damaged sections of the joint are removed, they are replaced with an artificial prosthesis. The Mako System helps the surgeon more accurately align the implant within the pre-defined area.

Patients who undergo robotic-arm assisted partial knee replacement can usually expect improved long-term outcomes, minimized pain and a speedier recovery.
