Lower extremity amputees looking to get the most out of their orthotic or prosthetic devices can turn to Overlook Medical Center. Our Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Next Step Orthopaedics Inc. have partnered with the Amputee Walking School to host an advanced gait training and running program in New Jersey.
Under the direction of former paralympic athletes, Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler, patients of all ages and levels of lower limb amputation, including above and below-knee amputations, will learn exercises and stretches designed to improve function and restore an active lifestyle. Once taught how to properly use their muscles to control their orthotic devices, our patients will be able to walk, run, move side-to-side, bend down, jump and climb stairs with increased strength and flexibility and less fatigue.
Amputees may be accompanied by their spouse or family members and exercises can be customized to individual needs. Beginners can learn basic exercises designed at improving their walking gate, while those more experienced with orthotics can partake in advanced exercises and running techniques.
