I feel very fortunate to have crossed paths with the wonderful doctors and nurses at Overlook. Fate may have brought me here, but the advanced technology and treatment, along with the caring staff, saved my life.

Research

Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center is committed to translating significant research results directly into effective new treatment options for cancer patients.

We have many of the nation’s top doctors and researchers and are a Major Clinical Research Affiliate of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ). This alliance and other clinical partnerships with industry and cooperative groups addresses clinical research in a way that allows our center to provide the community with the latest available investigational medicine and treatments.

Carol G. Simon Cancer Center handles a portfolio of research for all types of cancer and participates in the following research groups:

  • American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG)
  • Children’s Cancer Study Group (through a partnership with Goryeb Children’s Hospital)
  • Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG)
  • Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG)
  • National Cancer Institute Group
  • National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP)
  • Pharmaceutical studies
  • Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG)
  • Sarah Cannon Research Institute
  • Special institutional studies designed by our clinical investigators or those at CINJ

Patient Participation

Participating in a clinical study gives eligible patients early access to promising new treatment, often at no additional cost, and is considered the highest standard of care when it is available. In addition to treatment studies, we offer trials related to screenings, quality of life and survivorship.

Eligibility criteria are unique to each available study, so not all patients will qualify. We assess patients both before the start of their treatment and throughout the course of their care to determine if a clinical trial may be right for them.

Current Cancer Clinical Trials

  • Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial – The Women’s Cancer Center, part of Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown and Overlook Medical Centers, is evaluating periodic blood tests that may be helpful in the early detection of ovarian cancer. To participate or learn more information, call 973-971-6491 or email Ovarian.Screening@atlantichealth.org. Find out more about this trial >

  • Gene TrialAtlantic Melanoma Center at Morristown and Overlook Medical Centers is an internationally-recognized clinical research center that diagnoses and treats patients with melanoma, including those in the skin, mucous membranes and eyes. Currently, we are one of only seven sites across the country to participate in a gene therapy trial, in which genetically-engineered material is injected into a tumor to “teach” it how to fight the cancer. To participate or learn more information, please call 973-971-5990 or 908-522-6195.
