Morristown Medical Center Only Hospital in Mid-Atlantic Region Recognized with Five Stars in All Five Orthopedic Cohorts

Overlook Medical Center Only Hospital in NJ and NY Recognized as One of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Treatment of Stroke Seven Years in a Row

Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center were again recognized in the top five and 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for the clinical specialties for which they are nationally and regionally recognized for in the Healthgrades 2020 Report to the Nation, released today.

The report uses Medicare and other data to analyze a hospital’s quality and safety metrics in common inpatient clinical procedures and conditions and recognizes top-performing hospitals.

Morristown Medical Center maintained its leadership position as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals—in the top five percent of hospitals in the nation—for two years in a row for Cardiac Surgery™ and as one of America's 100 Best Hospitals™—among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation—in these specialty care areas:

  • Cardiac Care for nine years in a row (2012-2020)
  • Orthopedic Surgery for six years in a row (2015-2020)
  • Joint Replacement for five years in a row (2016-2020)
  • Critical Care (2020)

Notably, Morristown Medical Center was the sole hospital in New Jersey and in the Mid-Atlantic region to achieve five stars—the highest ranking that demonstrates that a hospital’s actual performance is statistically significantly better than expected—in all five orthopedic cohorts rated (Total Knee, Hip Replacement, Hip Fracture Treatment, Back Surgery, and Spinal Fusion) for 2020. The medical center is one of only five medical centers in the nation to achieve this recognition.

Overlook Medical Center was the only hospital in New Jersey and New York to be recognized as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for the Treatment of Stroke for seven years in a row.

Since 2017, Healthgrades has recognized Overlook Medical Center among the top five percent of hospitals in the U.S. for excellence in the Treatment of Stroke, Cranial Neurosurgery and Neurosciences more times than any other hospital in New Jersey or New York.

Overlook Medical Center was also one of only two hospitals in New Jersey to achieve all three Healthgrades Neurosciences specialty excellence awards in 2020: Cranial Neurosurgery, Stroke Care, and Neurosciences.

In addition, Overlook Medical Center was named one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for:

  • Critical Care for five years in a row (2016-2020)
  • General Surgery for four years in a row (2017-2020)
  • Gastrointestinal Care (2020)

Atlantic Health System’s Newton Medical Center was recognized as one America's 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care and also recognized in these specialty care areas:

  • Stroke Care Excellence Award™ for two years in a row (2019-2020)
  • Named among the top 10 percent in the nation for Treatment of Stroke for two years in a row (2019-2020)
  • Five-star recipient for Treatment of Stroke for two years in a row (2019-2020)

Newton Medical Center also received five-star ratings for treatment of the following conditions – heart failure, sepsis (both 10 years in a row) and respiratory failure (6 years in a row).

“Across all of our clinical specialties, Atlantic Health System is dedicated to ensuring exceptional quality, safety, and positive outcomes for all who enter our system of care,” said Jan Schwarz-Miller, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical and Academic Officer for Atlantic Health System. “We are pleased to be recognized for our signature programs and proud to add new recognitions, which reflect the innovation and clinical initiatives we’ve implemented over the past few years.”

“The hospitals that stand out for exceptional performance in these specialty care procedures should be commended for their long-standing commitment to quality,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “As consumers are increasingly savvy when it comes to finding and selecting a hospital, patients can be confident when they select a hospital that has achieved this Healthgrades recognition.”

About the 2020 Report to the Nation

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states.

Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
