More than 16,000 children a year are adopted by American families from countries abroad, including China, Russia, Eastern Europe and South America. Many of these children are raised in orphanages and have developmental delays and attachment disorders, as well as infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and hepatitis.
Atlantic Health System Children's Health offers a comprehensive international adoption program that combines the expertise of our Child Development and Autism Center professionals with our pediatric infectious disease specialists to evaluate the health and developmental needs of children before and after adoption. Services include initial assessments of newly-arrived children, provision of care plans for pediatricians, review of pre-adoption videotapes and travel health advice for prospective parents. Both the pediatrician and the new parents will receive a written summary of our team’s findings to help guide the future care of their child.
As part of Atlantic Health System Children’s Health, physician services are provided through Atlantic Medical Group and are on staff at Goryeb Children’s Hospital.
