Practice & Health Systems Management

Practice and health system management is a special interest of our residency program director and our residency office medical director. This topic is addressed by a monthly conference throughout the three years of training, and a two-week rotation in PGY-1. The monthly conferences cover such topics as coding and billing, contract negotiations and practice finance. Coding and billing - a critical topic to master for real world post-graduate private practice - is also covered in ongoing chart audits, precepting and feedback.

Third-year residents receive assistance with resume writing, review of job opportunities and search strategies. All residents attend office management meetings, bi-monthly patient safety meetings, community and patient/family advisory meetings and resident populations health team meetings addressing care of patients at high risk for hospital admissions and emergency department use, as identified by our Accountable Care Organization.

Our practice is a Joint Commission-certified primary care medical home, which offers opportunities for residents to engage in multi-disciplinary and community-based care.

Residents develop leadership skills through participation on committees within the residency program, at the hospital, and in national organizations. Residents are also involved in recruitment, interviewing prospective residency candidates. Residents complete a series of modules in the AMA GME Competency Education Program, including modules on patient safety, quality improvement and medical liability insurance.
