Atlantic Health System Scores 7th Year on FORTUNE Magazine's '100 Best Companies to Work For® '

March 20, 2015

March 2015, Morristown, NJ – Atlantic Health System, one of the largest health care organizations in New Jersey, has been named for a 7th consecutive year to FORTUNE® magazine’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For®.”

Ranking 39th on FORTUNE’s list, Atlantic Health System is the highest-ranked hospital system from New Jersey on the list.

The parent company of Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, Overlook Medical Center in Summit, Newton Medical Center in Newton, Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains, and Goryeb Children’s Hospital, appears on the prestigious list with the elite company of some of the country’s best-known and successful corporations such as Google, Whole Foods and Twitter. The list will appear on newsstands on Monday, March 9.

“It may be our seventh year, but our repeated recognition by Fortune isn’t a matter of luck,” said Andrew Kovach, vice president, human resources and chief administrative officer, Atlantic Health System. “It shows that the high value we place on our workers is not only appreciated, but is also the driving force behind the excellence, innovation, achievement and growth throughout our organization.”

Atlantic Health System was selected among hundreds of companies vying for a place on the list this year. Applicant companies opt to participate in the selection process, which includes an employee survey and an in-depth questionnaire about their programs and company practices. Great Place to Work® then evaluates each application using its unique methodology based on five dimensions: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

Creators of the methodology behind the list, Great Place to Work® has found that employees believe they work for great organizations when they consistently trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do and enjoy the people they work with.

This marks the first year that employees at Chilton Medical Center were able to participate in the process, following the hospital’s merger with Atlantic Health System in January 2014.

“The supportive environment we created for our employees is one of the many traits that Chilton and Atlantic Health System shared, and part of what made joining together an obvious choice,” said Deborah Zastocki, president, Chilton Medical Center, vice president of Atlantic Health System.

Atlantic Health System’s high ranking was driven by the positive responses of its employees to the FORTUNE questionnaire – 93 percent of employees said they take pride in their work, 96 percent said they “feel good” about the ways the organization contributes to the community and 90 percent said they feel they are offered training opportunities to develop and grow professionally. Furthermore, 95 percent of employees said, considering everything about Atlantic Health System, they would declare that it is a “great place to work.” The organization has developed several ways to allow employees to recognize each other via the company’s intranet, where employees can post “Shout-Outs,” showcase their pride in the organization via On-the-Road photographs, and highlight specific departments in the daily “Good Morning Atlantic Health System,” feature.

Seeking to highlight distinguished contributions to the vision of the organization – empowering our communities to be the healthiest in the nation - Atlantic Health System presented the first Empower Awards in June 2014. In addition to recognizing community partners, the program also recognized physicians and employees for their contributions. Nominations, which were submitted by employees throughout the organization, ranged from a physician who volunteers every year during Thanksgiving week to offer free foot screenings, socks and shoes at a homeless shelter; a nurse educator who created cardiac education programs for women and envisioned what is now an annual Heart Health Fair; and a department that offers injury prevention education for children, in addition to providing free helmets and infant car seats to families in need.

Noting that 95 percent of Atlantic Health System employees responded that they want to work for the company for a long time, FORTUNE highlighted many of the organization’s initiatives to retain older workers.

Other benefits that have driven the high marks in employee satisfaction at Atlantic Health include:

  • Employee wellness and well-being initiatives
  • Rewards and recognition
  • Service awards for long-time employees
  • Professional development opportunities
