About me

Dr. Matthew Martinez is director of Atlantic Health System Sports Cardiology at Morristown Medical Center and a nationally recognized expert in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). He specializes in identifying and treating athletes who have underlying heart issues such as arrhythmia or HCM, a hereditary medical condition where the walls of the heart become excessively thick, obstructing blood flow from leaving the heart. Dr. Martinez sees patients at Morristown Medical Center’s Center for the Treatment of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a center dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of HCM patients, a first-in-kind, multidisciplinary HCM program in New Jersey. Board-certified and fellowship-trained in cardiovascular disease at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Dr. Martinez serves as a cardiology consultant for professional sports including acting as the League cardiologist for Major League Soccer and team cardiologist for the New York Jets. He also maintains a thriving practice evaluating structural heart disease in both symptomatic and asymptomatic athletes using cardiac imaging, including echocardiography, stress testing, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. Throughout his internship, residency and fellowship training at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Dr. Martinez was recognized with multiple honors including chief cardiology fellow, and clinical associate professorships. He received an American College of Cardiology Emerging Faculty Award, has led many educational events nationally and internationally on various cardiovascular topics, and regularly presents on sudden cardiac arrest at national meetings. Prior to joining Atlantic Health System, he was Associate Chief of Cardiology at Lehigh Valley Health Network, where he held numerous clinical and administrative roles while often being named teacher of the year. He serves as the American College of Cardiology’s Chair of Sports and Exercise section. He has also served as the educational program chairman for the international Athletic Heart Symposium on management of athletes with cardiovascular risk. Dr. Martinez is available for consultation in athletes and active individuals with acquired conditions including hypertension, coronary artery disease, arrhythmia and valvular disease. In addition to those with hereditary cardiovascular disease, such as heart muscle, electrical, valvular and artery diseases, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

LOVE Dr. Martinez. I always leave my appointments with him feeling at ease and positive despite a scary HCM diagnosis. He makes me feel confident I can continue to live a full, fun, active life despite my HCM.
