Barry M. Cohen, MD, FACC
Director, Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program

In addition to his position at Atlantic Health Systems, Dr. Cohen is a cardiologist in clinical practice with Associates in Cardiovascular Disease of the Atlantic Medical Group in Springfield, New Jersey.

A native of Montreal, Dr. Cohen earned his BSc in physiology with distinction from McGill University; MD at the University of Sherbrooke; Internal Medicine Residency at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis­­­­ – Jewish General Hospital of McGill University in Canada. He then completed his Clinical Cardiology and Catheterization Fellowships at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York where he also served as Associate Director of the CCU. Dr. Cohen completed his Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of California – San Diego Medical Center before coming to Morristown Medical Center.

Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Angiography and Interventions and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is a past president of the New Jersey Society of Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Cohen is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine both at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine and at Thomas Jefferson’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

He has authored or coauthored numerous articles and abstracts in journals such as the American College of Cardiology, Circulation and the American Journal of Cardiology. His recent book “Coronary Heart Disease – From Diagnosis to Treatment 3rd Edition,” Addicus Books 2019 serves as a patient’s guide to Coronary Disease.

Dr. Cohen has delivered numerous presentations and grand rounds on a wide range of topics regionally, nationally and internationally. He is the principal investigator or coinvestigator of multiple studies. In 2018 he received the Physician Partnership Award from the nursing staff at Morristown Medical Center.

Lawrence Blitz, MD, FACC, FSCAI

Dr. Blitz is a consultative and interventional cardiologist in practice with Cardiology Associates of North Jersey since 1997. His areas of expertise include the medical and interventional management of coronary and peripheral vascular disease. He is also involved with the Interventional Valve Program at Morristown Medical Center.

After graduating from Haverford College and NYU School of medicine, he completed an Internal Medicine residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and fellowship training in Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is active on the medical staffs of Morristown Medical Center as well as Chilton Medical Center where he serves as the Chairman of Cardiology and the Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. At Chilton Medical Center, he started the peripheral vascular interventional program and has directed the STEMI program since its initiation in 2005.

Dr. Blitz is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He has served as a past president of the New Jersey Society of Interventional Cardiology and has participated as the local Principle Investigator in several multicenter trials in clinical and interventional cardiology. He has presented at both national and international Interventional Cardiology conferences. He is published on the topics of valvular heart disease, and interventional therapies for limb ischemia and DVT.

In addition to his position at Atlantic Health System, Dr. Safirstein is a cardiologist in practice with Cardiology Consultants of North Morris. His expertise includes vascular interpretation, interventional cardiology, adult transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine. He is a member of the New York Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Study Group.

Dr. Safirstein is a fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and American College of Cardiology, as well as a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, and American College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Safirstein earned his BA in biology at Colgate University and his MD at Chicago Medical School. After graduating, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. He completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular intervention at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center under the auspices of New York Medical College.
