Conditions we treat with DBS
Deep brain stimulation is primarily used to treat the following movement disorders.
Parkinson's disease
DBS is effective in reducing tremors, stiffness (rigidity), slowness of movement (bradykinesia), and certain medication-related side effects such a dyskinesia.
Dystonia
The neurological condition causes involuntery muscle contractions, resulting in twisting and repetitive movements. DBS can help control these muscle contractions.
Essential tremor
DBS can significantly reduce the uncontrollable shaking or tremors that commonly affect the hands, but can also affect the head voice and other parts of the body.
Other use cases
DBS is sometimes used to treat conditions such as Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and epilepsy, but these are less common.
You may be a candidate for DBS implantation if one of these conditions is severely impacting your quality of life and treatments with medications and physical rehabilitation have been unsuccessful. Doctors will determine if any other medical or cognitive conditions are present before prescribing DBS.
