About me
Dr. Kiwon Lee, MD, FACP, FAHA, FCCM, is a renowned academic neuro- intensivist and vascular neurologist. He graduated from formal training programs in stroke, neurological and neurosurgical critical care from Harvard Medical School – Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He is triple boarded in neurology, vascular neurology and stroke, and neurocritical care. He is one of the first certified neurointensivsits in neurocritical care by CAST Neurosurgery certification in the nation. He has over 20 years of experience as an academic neurologist. He joined Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia in 2005 as the Director of Neuro-Intensive Care Unit and Program Director of the Neuro-Critical Care Fellowship training. He then served as faculty neurointensivist at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons from 2007 to 2012, and trained residents and fellows from neurology, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, pulmonary critical care medicine, anesthesiology, and critical care medicine. From 2012 to 2017, he became vice chair of neurosurgery for critical care and division chief of neurocritical care at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and developed the neuroscience and neurotrauma intensive care program as one of the largest programs in the country. Since July 2017, Dr. Lee has been recruited and appointed as Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Rutgers, the state university of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Chief of Neurology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Dr. Lee served as the Director of RWJ Comprehensive Stroke Center, Division Chief of Stroke and Critical Care, and Director of Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Lee held a joint academic appointment in the department of Neurosurgery as full Professor of Neurosurgery and trained all neurosurgeons in training. He has also trained numerous neurologists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists and medical-surgical intensivists and faculty scholars and sabbatical professors who came from Europe, Asia and South America to train under him. He is the editor-in-chief of a formal textbook, The Neuro ICU Book, which has become the standard textbook in neurocritical care that has been printed in multiple languages (English, Portuguese and Japanese) and being used and studied by physicians and surgeons worldwide. He has more than 260 publications and over 4,050 citations which places him in the top 5% of the Doximity medical community in USA for H research index. His research focuses on acute interventional stroke therapies and advanced treatment of delayed ischemic neurological deficits after subarachnoid hemorrhages. He has been actively involved in hemostasis research as well as advanced cardiac output monitoring research for severe brain injury patients. He has been invited to give numerous keynote speeches and grand rounds, as well as continued medical education and special lectures in the United States and around the globe. He has chaired national and international academic sessions at the medical/surgical society congress meetings and directed national-level medical conferences. He has mentored and trained a large number of academic neurologists, neurosurgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists and emergency medicine physicians in the United States. He has mentored professors and scholars who came to train with him from many other countries. He is a reviewer for several leading medical journals including the Neurology, Neurocritical Care, New England Journal of Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. He is on the editorial board for Journal of Intensive Care Medicine and Cerebrovascular Diseases. He is an active member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Heart Association, American Stroke Association, Neurocritical Care Society and Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has been awarded as a fellow of the American Heart Association, American Stroke Council, American College of Physicians, and American College of Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Lee is currently the chairman of department of neurology at Morristown Medical Center and system leader for acute care neurology for the entire Atlantic Health System. Atlantic Health System has seven medical centers and over 400 clinical facilities. Dr. Lee continues to teach at Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School as clinical professor of neurology where he has been the recipient of neurology teacher of the year and Chancellor’s award of excellence in clinical care
