Medical students at Morristown Medical Center gain hands-on clinical experience while working alongside physician mentors in one of New Jersey’s leading academic medical centers.

Successful completion of all 3rd year clerkships

The cardiology rotation exposes 4th year medical students to a broad variety of cardiac disorders, including the observation of common and more technologically advanced cardiac procedures. Students will work with fellows and attending physicians in hospital and outpatient care settings.

Students will:

  • Participate in weekly rotations on these services: consultation service, non-invasive lab, cardiac cath lab, and coronary care unit
  • Shadow cardiology fellows on each of the services listed above
  • Attend morning conference, Monday–Thursday. These are attending physician led sessions, primary case-based discussions
  • Participate in daily noon conference didactic curriculum
  • Attend weekly cardiology fellows clinic
  • To enhance skills in cardiology history taking
  • To enhance skills in cardiology physical exams
  • To enhance skills in analyzing cardiology clinical data, creating a differential diagnosis and formulating a treatment plan

The attending preceptor and cardiology fellow will provide consistent written evaluations and will offer feedback throughout the rotation. A final, written evaluation will be completed at the end of the rotation.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

4th Year Ob-Gyn Sub-Internship Opportunities

  • Sub-internship opportunities in gynecologic oncology; maternal-fetal medicine; minimally invasive/general gynecology; urogynecology (please note: offerings may vary annually)
  • One student per service per block; rotation starts on the first Monday of the month

Successful completion of all 3rd year clerkships; interest in ob-gyn preferred

During the obstetrics & gynecology sub-internship, students will participate in one service specialty (combined office and hospital-based), working with the attending physicians, fellows and residents and serving in the capacity of an intern.

Students will:

  • Attend resident didactics and conferences including resident morning report and noon conferences, as well as grand rounds lectures, mortality & morbidity reviews, and journal club
  • Have the opportunity to spend several evening or weekend on-call shifts (optional)

Service specifics:

Gynecologic oncology

Students will:

  • Assist with surgical cases in the operating room
  • Work in a private office and in the clinic, under the supervision of an attending physician
  • Perform consults and ER assessments
  • Perform morning rounds and post-operative checks on patients
  • Participate in teaching rounds and didactics and prepare one topic for presentation
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a research project (potentially)

Maternal-fetal medicine

Students will:

  • Participate in morning huddle and patient rounds
  • Participate in teaching rounds
  • Assist with inpatient consultations and with surgical cases in the operating room
  • Observe office procedures and ultrasounds
  • Work in a private office and in the clinic under the supervision of an attending physician
  • Participate in didactics and prepare one topic for presentation
  • Spend one day each week on labor and delivery with the residents
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a research project (potentially)

Urogynecology

Students will:

  • Assist with surgical cases in the operating room
  • Work in a private office and in the clinic under the supervision of an attending physician
  • Perform consults, ER assessments, morning rounds and post-operative checks on patients
  • Participate in teaching rounds and didactics and prepare one topic for presentation
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a research project (potentially)
  • To function as an integral member of a multidisciplinary health care team
  • To assume responsibility for continuity of patient care
  • To develop competence in the medical interview and physical examination of women
  • To identify and justify a working diagnosis based on the clinical scenario, citing evidence to support the diagnosis
  • To develop and implement a comprehensive management plan for each patient
  • To learn about the transition from office-based evaluation to inpatient management
  • To obtain knowledge in perioperative care and to become familiar with relevant obstetric and/or gynecological procedures
  • To apply principles of evidence-based medicine to patient care
  • To deliver oral presentations that are comprehensive, organized and demonstrate sound clinical judgment
  • To communicate effectively with teammates, patients and other health care professionals
  • To incorporate ethical, social and diversity perspectives in providing culturally competent health care
  • To recognize the physician’s role as a leader and as an advocate for women
  • To understand medical systems issues that impact patient care
  • To incorporate multidimensional feedback into performance
  • To explore the advantages of the Atlantic Health OB/GYN residency program for potential residency candidates
