PGY-1 pharmacy residency
Atlantic Health PGY-1 pharmacy residency is a 12-month, hospital-based program with four positions available each year. It provides training in a flexible, diversified setting with rotations at both Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center and Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center. The program was established in 2009 and is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. 2024 marked the exceptional 15-year anniversary of the AHS PGY-1 pharmacy residency program.
Our pharmacy residency provides an environment of learning with the specific goal of producing competent and compassionate pharmaceutical care practitioners. Residents will complete this objective through multi-disciplinary teamwork in a variety of different settings, as well as through independent study and project management. The program emphasizes development of clinical, communication and leadership skills necessary to provide high quality care and optimal patient outcomes.
PGY-2 specialty pharmacy residency programs
Our PGY-2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY-2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings.
Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY-2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.
The PGY-2 critical care pharmacy residency is a 12-month intensive specialty training program in critical care pharmacy at two academic medical centers: Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center and Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The program was established in 2020 and is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
The PGY-2 emergency medicine pharmacy residency focuses on the provision of clinical pharmacy services to Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The program was established in 2019 and is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Rotations (PGY-1)
Atlantic Health’s PGY-1 pharmacy residency program features the following rotations
Administration
The administration rotation will provide residents with the opportunity to become familiar with policy development and review, the role of the pharmacy leader in ensuring patient safety, management techniques and budgeting. Residents will participate in various meetings on organizational and departmental levels. They will also work with the pharmacy director at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center or Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center.
Infectious Diseases
The infectious diseases rotation will take place at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center or Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. Residents will follow patients on the Infectious Diseases Consult Service and participate in the daily rounds with the ID team. During this rotation, residents will learn evidence- and guideline-based pharmacotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of common infectious disease conditions, and will also perform pharmacokinetic monitoring of antimicrobials.
Internal Medicine
The internal medicine rotation is available at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center or Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center. Residents will round with the Medical Education team consisting of a faculty internist, PGY-2 or PGY-3 “senior resident,” two interns, and medical students. Residents will expand their knowledge by identifying the etiology, pathophysiology, and evidence-based treatments of common diseases such as diabetes, venous thromboembolism, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and atrial fibrillation.
Medical ICU
This critical care rotation emphasizes the understanding and management of problems specifically related to critically ill medical patients. Identification of patient problems and application of clinical therapeutics to the critically ill patient will be stressed. Specific topics discussed include hemodynamic and physiologic monitoring, pharmacokinetic monitoring and infectious problems in critically ill patients. During the critical care rotation, residents will round with the medical team in a 12-bed MICU at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center or 30-bed MICU at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center.
Orientation
This is a one-month rotation that will orient residents to the operations of a hospital pharmacy. Residents will be able to perform all the duties of a staff pharmacist at the completion of this rotation. Duties include, but are not limited to, profiling and dispensing medications, preparing IV solutions, providing drug information to patients and health care professionals, and completing clinical interventions. This rotation will incorporate the staffing requirement that will continue throughout the year.
Advanced Heart Failure
This rotation is designed to give residents an opportunity to experience various patient care settings from the outpatient heart failure clinic to critical care areas (CCU, CVICU). Commonly encountered patient populations include heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, genetic and alcohol induced cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, cardiac sarcoidosis, cardiogenic shock patients, mechanical circulatory support patients (IABP, Impella, LVAD, ECMO), pulmonary hypertension patients, and pre and post heart transplant patients. Responsibilities of this rotation include patient chart review of inpatients on the advanced heart failure service, updating of iVents on patients on high-risk medications, heart transplant evaluations, identification and resolution of any medication-related issues, evaluation of medical regimens for appropriateness and patient counseling. Upon completion of this rotation, residents will better understand the role clinical pharmacists play in the management of advanced heart failure.
Ambulatory Care
The ambulatory care rotation is designed to introduce pharmacy residents on the role of the pharmacist in an outpatient clinic. The residents are empowered to treat and appropriately triage the most complex chronic and acute illness presented by ambulatory patients, including those with multiple disease states and serious complications. This care is delivered within the context of a long-term health care partnership with the patient that emphasizes health improvement, wellness, and disease prevention.
Antimicrobial Stewardship
The purpose of the antimicrobial stewardship rotation is to further develop and enhance pharmacotherapeutic knowledge and skills in patients with infectious diseases. The resident will be responsible for daily monitoring/evaluating patients that are filtered through various alerts and reports, targeting specific antimicrobial stewardship tasks. These tasks may include the following: de-escalation of therapy, management of specific infectious syndromes, pharmacokinetic monitoring, monitoring restricted antimicrobial agents, multi-drug resistant organisms, drug shortages, etc. The resident will contact the primary team or infectious diseases physician to discuss recommendations for therapy modifications. Specific disease state topics will be discussed based on the patients being monitored. In addition, the resident will complete a retrospective evaluation of management of a specific disease state or utilization of a specific antimicrobial agent, as needed.
Cardiac Surgery ICU
The purpose of the cardiothoracic surgery rotation is to develop the resident’s skills in the identification and resolution of pharmacotherapeutic issues in care of cardiothoracic surgery patients. The resident will be responsible for identifying and resolving medication therapy issues for patients and will work toward assuming care of all patients on two units throughout the learning experience. The resident will actively participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds in CPACU and CVICU at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center.
Cardiac Care Unit
The cardiology rotation affords experiential education in the provision of clinical pharmacy services for patients on the adult cardiology service at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. This includes focused time in the coronary care unit, heart failure unit, and general cardiology telemetry units. The resident will work closely with the preceptor to provide full clinical services for patients admitted to the cardiology service. These services include participation in physician patient care rounds, assessment of and recommendations for optimizing patient drug therapy, providing drug information to the health care team, and providing patient education when necessary.
Emergency Medicine
Residents will have the opportunity to apply and expand pharmacotherapeutic knowledge through a variety of ways in an ED setting. They will be responsible for collecting and assessing patient information, reviewing medication orders, performing medication reconciliation, patient counseling, evaluating antimicrobial culture results, providing drug information and making recommendation to the ED team, reporting adverse drug events, acting as a liaison between pharmacy and the ED, and participating in a variety of patient codes.
Informatics
This elective rotation focuses on healthcare analytics. The resident is exposed to considerations of managing patient populations in inpatient, outpatient, community, population health, and managed care points of view. At the conclusion of the rotation, the resident will be comfortable working with post-adjudicated healthcare claims, financial data, and Electronic Medical Record extracts to discover ways in which to care better for our patient population.
Internal Medicine II
During this rotation, the resident will be provided more independence, while improving their skills regarding pharmacotherapeutic optimization of various disease states in the inpatient acute care setting. The resident may also have the opportunity to co-precept students on this rotation.
Neonatology
The overall goal of this one-month rotation in neonatal critical care is to enhance residents' competency in neonatal pharmacotherapy and to develop a philosophy of practice regarding the role of the clinical pharmacist as a member of the health care team. Residents will participate in the drug use decision-making process, develop clinical pharmacokinetic skills needed to ascertain the unique pharmacokinetic characteristics of this patient population, and refine nutritional knowledge specific to the neonatal patient.
NeuroICU
This rotation at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center is designed to familiarize residents with the pharmacotherapeutic management of adult neuro-critical care patients. It will focus on the management of drug therapy for disease states such as acute ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral edema, seizures and meningitis. Residents will monitor drug therapy and identify drug-related issues, such as appropriate selection and dosing of medications, drug interactions, therapeutic drug monitoring and adverse drug reactions. They will work collaboratively with physicians, including the neurointensivist and neurosurgeons, nurses, and other health care professionals to obtain relevant information and resolve issues related to drug therapy.
Oncology
The oncology rotation takes place at the inpatient oncology unit at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center or Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center. This rotation is intended to familiarize the resident with therapeutic management based on the diagnosis and staging of cancer in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Some topics covered will include etiology, oncologic emergencies, liquid malignancies, pain management and palliative care. The resident will work with physicians from all disciplines, nurses, social workers and care managers to optimize medication therapy for patients as well as provide medication education and counseling.
Pediatric ICU
This rotation is designed to provide residents with a basic understanding of disease states and conditions commonly seen in pediatric intensive care patients. Emphasis will be placed on the therapeutic management of pediatric intensive care patients and the unique pharmacological/pharmaceutical requirements of these patients. The role of the clinical pharmacist in the selection and monitoring of drug use in pediatric patients will be stressed.
Population Health
This rotation is intended to familiarize the resident with the principles of population health and value-based care focusing on the application of pharmacotherapy knowledge to provide Comprehensive Medication Management of high-risk patients in transitions of care as well proactive outreach in the ambulatory setting while working collaboratively with a interprofessional team. Additionally, the resident will have several leadership opportunities through collaboration with ACO and AHS leadership, Population Managers, Care Coordination, Integrated Care, ISS, Project Management. The resident will have several educational opportunities including but not limited to Care Coordination, Population Management, and ACO Providers. This rotation is designed to allow the resident to develop skills in leadership, value-based care, population health, transitions of care, comprehensive medication management, and improving patient outcomes for a large population.
Psychiatry
This rotation provides experience in treating adult patients voluntarily admitted to an inpatient psychiatric hospital at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The resident will participate in the daily interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and interact with other healthcare professionals (social workers, nurses, case managers, recreational therapists, and psychiatrists) to collaborate on patient care decisions. The pharmacy resident will be expected to provide evidence-based and patient-centered medication recommendations for each patient and lead medication education groups.
Research Pharmacy
This rotation is designed to introduce residents to investigational drug services and clinical research design. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the role of clinical research trials in the drug development process. The role of the pharmacist in protocol development; investigational drug storage, preparation, and dispensing; regulatory, clinical, and administrative functions; and patient and staff education will be the central focus.
Teaching
The general premise behind this academic/teaching rotation is to expose residents to the responsibilities associated with being a faculty member. This involves much more than just in-class interactions with students and lecture presentations. Most of the time will be spent developing materials, discussing ideas for implementation within courses and participating in administrative activities fundamental to a faculty position. The resident(s) will spend their time at Rutgers and FDU during the month to get a concept of how different universities teach. The rotation will be a collaborative process between faculty and resident with feedback provided to assist in self-directed learning.
Transitions of Care
This an acute care rotation will demonstrate the pharmacist’s impact on improving outcomes, reducing readmissions and improving patient quality of life. The resident will practice transitioning the patient to and from different settings for a core set of disease states, which will include, but not limited to cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine and infectious diseases. He or she will also have an opportunity to manage patients independently while working with physicians, nurses and other medical providers. Activities will include obtaining medication history, monitoring and optimization of therapy during hospital stays, reviewing medication reconciliation on discharge, assisting with access to medications, and providing patient education on medications and disease states.
Trauma and Surgery
During this rotation residents will round with the surgical team in the 22-bed SICU at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The patient population consists of trauma, general surgical, neurology and neurosurgical patients. The team typically consists of one trauma attending, a surgical resident, a surgical intern, and one or two students. Common disease states in which residents will be expected to gain proficiency through literature review, topic discussion, and/or direct patient care experience may include, but are not limited to: traumatic brain injury/intracranial hemorrhage, surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis, surgical infectious complications, fluid and electrolytes management, status epilepticus.
Research Project
The research project provides an opportunity to complete a major research project and prepare a manuscript for publication during the one-year program. Residents will work with the residency advisor(s) and learn essential key points of research design. Last year's research projects: Evaluation of Atlantic Health patient first hyperkalemia targeted Med Warning implementation; Impact of crystalloid fluid choice in patient with sepsis; Impact of updated heparin algorithm layout/boluses on supratherapeutic aPTTs; Impact of reclassification of Serratia marcescens as a low-risk AmpC pathogen on treatment selection and outcomes in bacteremia; Analgesia-first sedation practice update; Safety and efficacy of desmopressin for intracranial hemorrhage associated with antiplatelet use.
Pharmacy Operations
According to American Society of Health System Pharmacists guidelines, each resident is required to complete a “staffing” component of the residency. Residents will gain proficiency in distribution skills, incorporation of clinical services and development of personnel management skills. They also will develop insight into the operations, policies and procedures of acute care facilities. Residents will be scheduled to staff every other weekend at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center or Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center.
Pharmacy Practice Management
Pharmacy practice management is a longitudinal rotation in which the resident works closely with the pharmacy leadership team. This rotation will focus on participation in the system-wide P&T committee, including meeting preparation/documentation and drug monograph development; participation in medication safety initiatives, such as ISMP best practices; and participation in IPPE preceptorship.
Quality Project
Senior pharmacy leadership will work closely with the resident to develop an administrative project. The project will be led by the resident, and presented at the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Midyear Meeting. Last year's administrative projects: Analyzing pediatric and neonatal vancomycin dosing and monitoring for institutional guideline up-dates; Sepsis fluid dosing in patients with CKD/CHF; Evaluation of institution-specific Low Intensity Unfractionated Heparin protocol; Predictive value of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus nasal screen by PCR in trauma patients; Tirofiban vs cangrelor for the treatment of cerebrovascular stent placement; Safety and efficacy of symptom-triggered phenobarbital for the use of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
Rutgers Teaching and Learning Certificate
Organized by the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University, the Teaching and Learning Certificate Program prepares clinical educators, so they can inspire students and advance the pharmacy profession. Enrolled residents are required to attend a live, three-hour session once a month through the academic year (except December) and precept a Rutgers pharmacy student in the Intermediate Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) for four weeks.
Rotations (PGY-2)
Our PGY-2 specialty pharmacy residency programs — critical care and emergency medicine — enable clinical pharmacists to develop in specialized areas of practice. Residents have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in patient care and other advanced practice settings to prepare for advanced patient care, academic or other specialized positions, along with board certification.
Rotations PGY-2 Critical Care
PGY-2 critical care pharmacy residency includes required, elective and longitudinal rotations.
Cardiac Surgery
The Cardiac Surgery rotation is one-month in duration at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center, known for having the largest cardiac surgery program in New Jersey. The rotation consists of a 14-bed CPACU and 10-bed CVICU that services post-operative cardiac and thoracic patients. The resident will work with a multidisciplinary team that includes but is not limited to cardiac surgeons, intensivists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, and case managers. The resident will be responsible for identifying medication therapy issues and developing pharmacotherapy plans for patients following coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacement, Maze procedure, and many others.
Emergency Medicine
Emergency Medicine at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center is a month-long rotation where the CC resident will be exposed to various critical disease processes at the point of entry to the hospital. Through code response (cardiac arrest, STEMI, stroke, trauma) and patient care during critical procedures (RSI, moderate sedation, arrhythmia management) the resident will understand and embody the role of the pharmacist at the bedside. In addition, an emphasis will be made on the importance of transition of care management between the Emergency Department and ICU environments. There will be opportunities to provide education to other disciplines in an academic emergency department that is responsible for the training of emergency medicine physicians, nurses, and pharmacists.
Infectious Diseases
The infectious diseases rotation will take place at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center or Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. Residents will follow patients that qualify for antimicrobial stewardship review and participate in interdisciplinary management of various infections. During this rotation, residents will build upon evidence- and guideline-based approaches for the management of common infectious disease conditions and will also perform pharmacokinetic monitoring of antimicrobials.
Medical Intensive Care I
The MICU I rotation at Atlantic Health may be fulfilled at either the 30-bed MICU at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center or 12-bed MICU at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The resident will serve as the pharmacy representative for the academic teaching service in the medical ICU (MICU). The resident will participate as an active member of the multidisciplinary team caring for critically ill patients in the MICU. Residents are responsible for providing evidence-based, patient-centered pharmacotherapy recommendations, answering medication information questions, and participating in emergency response.
Medical Intensive Care II
The Medical Intensive Care Unit II (MICUII) rotation is a secondary learning experience to the MICUI rotation and may be fulfilled at either the 30-bed MICU at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center or 12-bed MICU at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The resident will serve as the pharmacy representative for the academic teaching service in the medical ICU (MICU). The resident will participate as an active member of the multidisciplinary team caring for critically ill patients in the MICU. Residents are responsible for providing evidence-based, patient-centered pharmacotherapy recommendations, answering medication information questions, and participating in emergency response.
Neurosciences Intensive Care
The Neurosciences Intensive Care (Neuro-ICU) rotation is a one-month learning experience at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center, the flagship site of the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute and a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center. Residents help manage pharmacotherapy for a spectrum of critically ill neurologically injured patients ranging from acute ischemic stroke, ruptured brain aneurysms, intracranial hemorrhage, status epilepticus, post-operative neurosurgical oncology patients and many others. The resident works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons, neurointensivists, advanced practice providers, and nurses to deliver the highest quality care in our renowned Neuro-ICU. Residents will focus on drug selection and dosing, identification of drug interactions, therapeutic drug monitoring, and management of drug-related adverse events.
Transitional Critical Care
Transitional critical care is a one-month learning experience at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center in the medical intensive care unit that prepares the resident for independent practice. During the final month of training, the resident manages patients on the MICU teaching service without pre- or post-rounding and responds as the sole pharmacist to code blue and code stroke situations. Preceptors are available for questions or consults, but are not routinely following patients on a daily basis. The goal is to simulate an environment where the resident becomes accustomed to making decisions on their own. The resident is also expected to prepare and organize educational topics for medical residents and learners on rotation with the MICU multidisciplinary team.
Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care I
Surgical Intensive Care Unit I (SICUI) rotation is a month-long learning experience at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The SICU is a 22-bed unit for critically ill trauma and surgery patients. The multidisciplinary team consists of a trauma attending, surgical resident, emergency medicine resident, clinical pharmacy specialist, bedside nurse, and respiratory therapist. The resident will be exposed to a wide variety of disease states commonly encountered in the adult SICU setting and will become familiar with the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of the drugs used in this setting. Common disease states in which residents will be expected to gain proficiency through literature review, topic discussion, and/or direct patient care experience may include, but are not limited to traumatic brain injury/intracranial hemorrhage, surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis, surgical infectious complications, nutrition and fluid/electrolytes management.
Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care II
Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care II (SICUII) rotation is a month-long learning experience at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center SICU. The resident will continue to be a part of the multidisciplinary team caring for trauma and surgery patients. This rotation will have a larger focus on nutrition in critically ill patients, spending time with SICU dietitian and designing and redesigning nutrition regimens in those patients.
Cardiology/Cardiac Intensive Care
The cardiology rotation is designed to give residents an opportunity to experience various cardiology and cardiac critical care areas like heart failure and the cardiac care unit (CCU). Responsibilities of this rotation include, but are not limited to, attending rounds daily in the CCU, identification and resolution of any medication-related issues, evaluation of medical regimens for appropriateness and patient counseling. Upon completion of this rotation, residents will better understand the role clinical pharmacists play in the management of acute care cardiology.
Pediatric Intensive Care
This rotation is designed to provide residents with an understanding of disease states and conditions commonly seen in the pediatric intensive care unit. Emphasis will be placed on the therapeutic management of pediatric intensive care patients and the unique pharmacological/pharmaceutical requirements of these patients. This rotation will also provide an opportunity to participate in pediatric emergencies as well as in the management of enteral and parenteral nutrition.
Toxicology
This month-long learning experience is designed to build upon prior rotation experiences and develop new skills in toxicology through the care of toxicologic patients at the NJ Poison Control Center (PCC), bedside care at MMC ED, and topic discussions. The resident will also be exposed to the role of the PCC in the healthcare and the community. Emphasis will be placed on physical exam and patient evaluation, pharmacodynamics and toxicokinetics, supportive care, and antidote therapy.
Teaching and Learning (Rutgers)
The Teaching and Learning Certificate Program affiliated with Rutgers University Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy is a longitudinal experience designed to educate pharmacy professionals on teaching styles and methodology related to multiple facets of didactic and clinical teaching. Residents attend lectures or seminars with Rutgers faculty on a monthly basis. They are expected to create their own teaching philosophy, design a rotation, and serve as the primary preceptor for a pharmacy student at their respective sites. The Teaching and Learning program is an excellent opportunity to network with other pharmacy residents and pharmaceutical industry fellows from across the state of New Jersey. Residents are encouraged to participate unless they have received a teaching certificate from a different program during their PGY-1 year.
Clinical Staffing
The PGY-2 Critical Care Clinical Staffing rotation is a longitudinal learning experience at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center consisting of both clinical and operational responsibilities every other weekend throughout the year. The resident participates in order verification and dispensing activities during the beginning of the program. As the resident progresses, they prioritize weekend clinical duties including rounding with the medical ICU team and providing pharmacy coverage for Code Blue and Code Stroke situations.
Practice Management
Practice Management is a longitudinal learning experience designed to hone the resident’s skills beyond direct patient care. Residents will actively participate in the Critical Care Committee at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center, complete a medication use evaluation, present a formal lecture for medical residents during their education series, and prepare and present a one-credit hour ACPE-approved continuing education presentation on a critical care topic. As a result of these experiences, residents will have the opportunity to contribute to critical care practice both within and outside Atlantic Health.
Research
The research learning experience provides an opportunity for the resident to complete a clinical research project related to critical care medicine. The resident will utilize research skills obtained from PGY-1 residency training to take the lead role executing a longitudinal research project from start to finish. The resident will work with at least one pharmacy research advisor who will guide them through the process of completing the project from study design, Institutional Review Board submission, data collection/analysis, and manuscript preparation. Resident research will be presented locally as well as at the Eastern States Residency Conference and other professional meeting platforms (if applicable). By the end of the residency year, the resident is expected to have a completed research manuscript in submission-ready form for peer-reviewed publication.
Rotations PGY-2 Emergency Medicine
PGY-2 emergency medicine pharmacy residency features the following rotations.
Emergency Medicine I
This is a month-long rotation at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The resident will be a part of the multidisciplinary team that cares for patients in the emergency department. The primary focus of this rotation will be critically ill patients. Residents are expected to take an active role in the care of critically ill patients. Medical emergencies will include but, are not limited to, stroke, MI, cardiac arrests, and trauma alerts. The goal of this rotation is to introduce the resident to the resuscitation workflow and patient population with a focus on collection and analysis of patient information.
Emergency Medicine II
This month-long rotation will focus on the care of critically ill patients and those presenting to the ED with infectious complaints. The primary focus of this rotation will be critically ill and infected patients. Residents are expected to take an active role in the care of critically ill patients. Medical emergencies will include but, are not limited to, stroke, MI, cardiac arrests, and trauma alerts. The goal of this rotation is to reinforce and build upon infectious disease concepts on empiric treatment and application to the ED workflow and patient population with a focus on collection and analysis of patient information.
Emergency Medicine III
The focus of this month-long rotation will be exposure to solidify learning on non-emergent conditions that may present to the emergency department. The goal of the topics discussed on this rotation is to reinforce and build upon an understanding of outpatient treatments and the care of patients that will be discharged from the emergency department. The overall goal of the rotation is to allow the resident to practice nearly independently in preparation for completion of the residency.
Emergency Medicine Academic
A layered learning model will be applied where the EM resident acts as the “senior” resident reporting to the EM pharmacist preceptor. There will be either a PGY-1 resident or student assigned to the EM resident with the goal to develop a teaching style and gain experience as a preceptor.
Emergency Medicine Community
This emergency medicine pharmacy rotation at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center Summit and Union campus is to provide the PGY-2 resident the opportunity to work as part of the interdisciplinary team in a community teaching hospital and a satellite Emergency Department. The 48-bed and 20-bed emergency departments for the Summit and Union campus respectively, services a wide range of patient populations from pediatrics to adults and specializes in neurological care including stroke management. The purpose of this rotation is to allow the resident to further develop and enhance pharmacotherapeutic skills required for provision of care in emergent treatment of patients. In addition, this rotation will focus on strengthening independence for the resident to manage all clinical and operational responsibilities.
Emergency Medicine Overnight
The goal of this rotation is to provide experience with temporal differences when working in the Emergency Department. The resident will be prepared to manage time and schedule to better prepare for expansion in the Emergency Department workforce into this shift schedule.
Orientation
During this first rotation, the Emergency Medicine resident will become familiar with policies and procedures that govern medication utilization at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. While orienting to the hospital, a focus will be placed on response to emergency situations and workflow in the Emergency Department. This will prepare the resident for staffing in the Emergency Department.
Pediatric Intensive Care
This rotation is designed to provide residents with an understanding of disease states and conditions commonly seen in the pediatric intensive care unit. Emphasis will be placed on the therapeutic management of pediatric intensive care patients and the unique pharmacological/pharmaceutical requirements of these patients. This rotation will also provide an opportunity to participate in pediatric emergencies as well as in the management of enteral and parenteral nutrition.
Toxicology I
This month-long learning experience is designed to build upon prior rotation experiences and develop new skills in toxicology through the care of toxicologic patients at the NJ Poison Control Center (PCC), bedside care at the Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center Emergency Department , and topic discussions. The resident will also be exposed to the role of the Poison Control Center in the healthcare and the community. Emphasis will be placed on physical exam and patient evaluation, pharmacodynamics and toxicokinetics, supportive care, and antidote therapy.
Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care
Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) rotation is a month-long learning experience at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center. The SICU is a 22-bed unit for critically ill trauma and surgery patients. The multidisciplinary team consists of a trauma attending, surgical resident, emergency medicine resident, clinical pharmacy specialist, bedside nurse, and respiratory therapist. The resident will be exposed to a wide variety of disease states commonly encountered in the adult SICU setting and will become familiar with the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of the drugs used in this setting. Common disease states in which residents will be expected to gain proficiency through literature review, topic discussion, and/or direct patient care experience may include, but are not limited to traumatic brain injury/intracranial hemorrhage, surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis, surgical infectious complications, nutrition and fluid/electrolytes management.
Cardiology/Cardiac Intensive Care
The cardiology rotation is designed to give residents an opportunity to experience various cardiology settings from the outpatient clinic (heart failure) to critical care areas (CCU, CVICU, cardiothoracic ICU). Responsibilities of this rotation include, but are not limited to, daily attending rounds in the CCU, identification and resolution of any medication-related issues, evaluation of medical regimens for appropriateness and patient counseling.
Medical Intensive Care
This rotation emphasizes the understanding and management of problems specifically related to critically ill medical patients. Identification of patient problems and application of clinical therapeutics to the critically ill patient will be stressed. Specific topics discussed include hemodynamic and physiologic monitoring, pharmacokinetic monitoring and infectious problems in critically ill patients. During the critical care rotation, residents will round with the medical team in a 10-bed MICU at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center.
Neurosciences Intensive Care
The Neurosciences Intensive Care (Neuro-ICU) rotation is a one-month learning experience at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center, the flagship site of the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute and a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center. Residents help manage pharmacotherapy for a spectrum of critically ill neurologically injured patients ranging from acute ischemic stroke, ruptured brain aneurysms, intracranial hemorrhage, status epilepticus, post-operative neurosurgical oncology patients and many others. The resident works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons, neurointensivists, advanced practice providers, and nurses to deliver the highest quality care in our renowned Neuro-ICU. Residents will focus on drug selection and dosing, identification of drug interactions, therapeutic drug monitoring, and management of drug-related adverse events.
Toxicology II
The toxicology II rotation is a one-month learning experience that will provide the resident with the opportunity to expand upon prior toxicology rotation experiences. The resident will rotate through the Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center (MMC) emergency department (ED). Throughout the rotation, the resident will also correspond with the primary preceptor, both in-person and remotely, to review select topic discussions and rotation progress.
Transitions of Care
This acute care rotation will demonstrate the pharmacist’s impact on improving outcomes, reducing readmissions and improving patient quality of life. The resident will practice transitioning the patient to and from different settings for a core set of disease states, which will include, but not limited to cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine and infectious diseases. He or she will also have an opportunity to manage patients independently while working with physicians, nurses and other medical providers. Activities will include obtaining medication history, monitoring and optimization of therapy during hospital stays, reviewing medication reconciliation on discharge, assisting with access to medications, and providing patient education on medications and disease states.
Emergency Medicine Practice Management
Practice management is a year-long longitudinal rotation that encompasses a variety of clinical, operational, and academic activities to build the resident's skill set. The resident will work closely with preceptors to develop and complete the following: i) Formal didactic lecture presented to the RN Hire Learners, ii) Formal didactic lecture presented to the Emergency Medicine Program's conference day, and iii) medication use evaluation. Additionally, the resident will provide service to the Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center Sepsis Committee, attend Critical Care Pharmacy monthly meetings, review adverse event reports related to the Emergency Department, and may provide service to other committees based on institutional need. The resident may also participate in longitudinal assignments including development of drug monographs, clinical practice guidelines, or multidisciplinary education.
Medication Use Evaluation (MUE)
The MUE rotation is a 6-month longitudinal rotation that will have the resident plan, develop, and complete an administrative project. The goal of the project will be to analyze the use of medication(s) in the treatment of disease to try to improve outcomes for our patient population
Pre-Hospital Medicine
In conjunction with Atlantic Mobile Health, the Emergency Medicine resident will participate in the treatment of patients by paramedics. The objective will be for the resident to become familiar with protocols and medication utilization in the pre-hospital environment.
Research
The Emergency Medicine resident will design, administer, and lead the research team to complete a project that will add to current literature on medication utilization in the Emergency Department. Research time will be assigned in December for time intensive tasks. A medication utilization or disease state review may also be completed during the residency year
Program requirements
Atlantic Health’s PGY-1 and PGY-2 pharmacy residency programs require the following criteria for eligibility:
- Received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy degree program or have Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy
- Completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program or one in the ASHP accreditation process prior to the start of the residency year (PGY-2 pharmacy residency programs only)
- Be eligible to participate in American Society of Health-System Pharmacists matching program
- Be eligible for licensure as a Pharmacist by the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy

Training sites - pharmacy residency
The training sites of the Pharmacy Residency Program at Atlantic Health are Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center, two world-class health care providers in community hospital settings.
New Jersey is one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse states in the country – a large percentage of the population are African American, Hispanic, Asian or Middle Eastern. Though Newark and Camden are two of the poorest cities in the country, New Jersey has the highest median household income of any state.
New Jersey is also the most densely populated state, and is the only state in the country to have every one of its counties labeled "urban" by the Census Bureau, even though many areas of the state feature acres of farms and woodlands.
Consequently, our patients come from the complete spectrum of socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds; have traveled all over the world; speak a variety of languages; and display an array of medical conditions.

The area
Morristown and Summit, NJ, home to Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center respectively, are small cities in northern New Jersey. The area is home to many Fortune 500 and pharmaceutical companies, which provide a robust employment environment. The Morris County parks system is one of the best in the state. Those with more urban pursuits need travel only about 30 minutes to New York; direct public transportation to the city is available. In addition, Philadelphia is about 90 minutes away.
