Leading Surgical Oncologist to Head New Physician Group at Morristown and Overlook Medical Centers

July 26, 2016, Morristown and Summit, NJ – Atlantic Health System is proud to announce the arrival of Lawrence Harrison, MD to the Atlantic Medical Group staff of the Carol G. Simon Cancer Centers at both Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center in Summit.  Dr. Harrison is a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist who will serve as chief of a new Atlantic Medical Group specialty practice called Atlantic Surgical Oncology.  He joins Atlantic Medical Group surgical oncologists Kai Bickenbach, MD and Eric Whitman, MD; and Lee Starker, MD, who will join Atlantic Surgical Oncology in August.

One of the most experienced surgical oncologists in New Jersey, Dr. Harrison has been a surgical innovator since finishing fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.  He has extensive training in novel surgical techniques, including in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, or HIPEC, which is a highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy treatment that is delivered directly to the abdomen during surgery.

“I look forward to working with Drs. Bickenbach, Whitman, and Starker to develop and provide a comprehensive, state of the art surgical oncology service across the entire Atlantic Health System community,” said Dr. Harrison.  “It is my expectation, that with the high-level physician talent we have, combined with the resources of the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, we will quickly become the premier surgical oncology group in New Jersey.”

Prior to joining Atlantic Surgical Oncology, Dr. Harrison served as director of surgical oncology at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood where he developed expertise in robotic surgery; performing more than 200 complex robotic surgical procedures.  In addition, he was director of the Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgical Fellowship.  Previously, he was Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at University Hospital in Newark for 12 years.  In addition to his clinical practice, he was involved in research and taught medical residents and students.

Atlantic Surgical Oncology offers two locations and phone numbers: Morristown Medical Center, Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, 4th floor, 100 Madison Avenue, Morristown and phone number 973-971-7092; and Overlook Medical Center, Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, 6th floor, 99 Beauvoir Avenue, Summit and phone number 908-522-6429.

Atlantic Surgical Oncology physicians provide expert surgical oncology care across a broad spectrum of surgically treated cancers, focusing on upper gastrointestinal, hepatic, biliary, pancreatic, gastric, skin and connective tissue (sarcoma) malignancies. The physicians work closely with medical and radiation oncology specialists to create true multidisciplinary care centers within Atlantic Medical Group at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center.
