Diagnostic & treatment options

Our pediatric diabetes centers offer comprehensive services for children and adolescents with diabetes and endocrine disorders from initial diagnosis through young adulthood.

Our physician services are provided through Atlantic Medical Group and are on staff at Atlantic Health Goryeb Children’s Hospital.

Diabetes services

Atlantic Health helps patients minimize long-term diabetes complications through optimal control of blood sugars. We provide specialized diabetes services, including finger-stick hemoglobin A1C testing, diagnostic continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy.

In addition to treating children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, our center also cares for young patients with less common forms of the condition, including:

• maturity-onset diabetes of youth (MODY)
• cystic fibrosis diabetes 
• chemotherapy-induced diabetes

What’s more, our family-focused high risk diabetes intervention program helps families of children and adolescents who are having difficulty managing their diabetes.

When it comes to optimizing blood sugars and educating patients on self-care, we believe in a team approach. Our center’s multidisciplinary staff is comprised of board-certified pediatric endocrinologists who are experienced in diabetes management, and nurses, nurse practitioners and dietitians who are certified diabetes educators. A social worker and family therapist are also on hand to provide support for our patients and their families.

Once our patients reach adulthood, we help transition their diabetes management to our adult diabetes programs.

Endocrinology services

Our skilled staff of pediatric endocrinologists and nurse practitioners care for children and adolescents with growth disorders, early and delayed puberty, calcium and bone disorders, and diseases of the thyroid, adrenal or pituitary gland.

We offer an on-site pediatric endocrine testing center and a long-term endocrine follow-up program for pediatric cancer survivors. Our center is also designated by the state for the management of newborn infants with congenital hypothyroidism and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

At the our pediatric diabetes centers we understand that a child’s diabetes diagnosis often affects the whole family. Our family-focused programs help not only our patients, but also their loved ones cope with the day-to-day stress of living with diabetes.

It’s Not the End of the World – Living with Type 1 Diabetes

If you or someone close to you has recently received a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, it is natural to experience feelings of fear, confusion, and stress regarding the unknown path ahead.

To address these emotions and provide valuable insights, Atlantic Health and Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) produced a 3-part video series featuring teenagers and young adults who live - well- with type 1 diabetes.
