What is a stroke?
A stroke, sometimes referred to as a “brain attack,” is a condition where blood flow is blocked to a part of the brain. This results in cell death due to lack of oxygen. If enough brain cells are destroyed, the patient may experience long-term side effects, such as loss of memory and muscle control.
Cerebrovascular disease is a group of disorders affecting the blood vessels in the brain. In addition to stroke, these include transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracranial aneurysms, and arteriovenous malformations.
Types of stroke
Hemorrhagic stroke (cerebral hemorrhage)
Bleeding into the brain which occurs when a blood vessel to the brain ruptures
Ischemic stroke (cerebral thrombosis)
Blood flow is blocked by a narrowed or closed artery
Ischemic stroke (cerebral embolism)
A blood clot, a small part of an artery wall or a small blood clot from a diseased artery, the heart, or elsewhere, travels to the brain
Arteriovenous malformation or cavernous angioma
Ruptured abnormal blood vessel
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Ruptured cerebral aneurysm
