About me

Harpal S. “Paul” Khanuja, MD, serves as chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center and specializes in adult reconstruction and hip and knee replacement surgery. Board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, he has more than 25 years of experience treating hip and knee arthritis, complex joint disorders and failed joint replacement surgery. Among other procedures, he performs anterior hip replacement surgery, partial knee replacements and robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery. Dr. Khanuja is committed to patient-centered care. He works with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan focused on pain relief, improved mobility and return to daily activities. He emphasizes shared decision-making, evidence-based treatment and patient education to ensure patients understand their condition and care options. Dr. Khanuja earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Albany Medical Center, also in Albany, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He also completed a Knee Society traveling fellowship in North America. Prior to joining Atlantic Health, Dr. Khanuja was a full-time professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he held multiple leadership roles including division chief of adult reconstruction, hip and knee replacement surgery. He also served in department leadership roles within the Johns Hopkins Health System. Dr. Khanuja has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications, delivered national and international presentations and remains active in academic orthopedic education. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, The Hip Society and The Knee Society. He is a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.
