A specialist in pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine, Dr. John Tis is one of the few fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic surgeons who is also board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in Sports Medicine. In addition to ACL tears and other sports injuries, he enjoys treating a wide variety of pediatric deformities including scoliosis and hip dysplasia. He is an expert in performing arthroscopic surgical procedures on ankles, hips, shoulders, elbows and knees, including ACL reconstructions. He treats injuries that include ACL tears, hip and shoulder dislocations and labral tears.
Dr. Tis has a special interest in treating Perthes Disease and was a founding member of the International Perthes Study Group (IPSG). In addition, he also treats orthopedic issues related to conditions including cerebral palsy, osteochondritis dessicans, slipped capital femoral epiphysis and spondylolisthesis.
After earning his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC, Dr. Tis completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, and a pediatric orthopedic surgery and scoliosis fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego, CA.
Previously, Dr. Tis was an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University, where he was on the faculty for 13 years. While there, he developed an orthopedic sports medicine practice and became an expert in arthroscopically treating orthopedic injuries and disorders as well as complex pediatric spine and limb deformities. Prior to that, he served for four years as the director of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Tis also served for 23 years in the active duty and reserve military including four wartime deployments where he treated high-energy war wounds and limb defects. He served as chief of Orthopaedics at Ibn Sina Hospital (“Baghdad ER”) during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Dr. Tis is a member of numerous professional societies including the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a part of Atlantic Medical Group and a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.
