The pediatric critical care service at Atlantic Health provides comprehensive medical care to children, from infants to young adults with acute life-threatening illness and injury.
The Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center is a 15-bed unit where children stay for postoperative management after major pediatric surgical procedures including neurosurgical, trauma and orthopedic procedures. All pediatric medical and surgical specialties at our children's hospital are available for consultation in the PICU.
The critical care team of the PICU is made up of a team of caregivers from various specialties to provide your child with the best possible care. Our pediatricians and physicians are board-certified in pediatric critical care and provide 24-hour coverage. They have advanced medical training and extensive experience, which allows them to administer the unique medical care that children in a PICU require.

Our team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, child life therapists and social workers are dedicated to treating critically ill infants, children and adolescents. They receive advanced training and extensive experience to prepare them to administer the unique medical care that children in the PICU need.

The pediatric intensive care nursing staff are experienced registered nurses trained to care for critically ill or injured infants, children, and adolescents. If you would like to speak to your child's nurse, please call the nurses' station at 973-971-5544.
The care manager works with parents and the medical team to develop discharge plans and assists families with insurance issues. The care manager's phone number is 973-971-6794.
The social worker helps children and their families deal with the non-medical problems related to illness, injury, and hospitalization. They counsel regarding social and financial needs and help obtain any necessary post-hospital care. The social worker can be reached at 973-971-5213.
A resident physician, who is a physician in training, is assigned to your child's care for the duration of the hospital stay and works closely under the direction of the pediatric physicians.
The child life specialists help reduce the stress and anxiety that many children/adolescents and their families experience in the health care setting. They provide teaching and preparation for procedures such as IV insertion and anesthesia induction. Distraction and therapeutic play activities are also offered to help children and adolescents cope easier with their hospital experience.
Transport team
The Atlantic Health Children's Health ambulance is specially equipped for critically ill pediatric patients and can transport children from other hospitals located in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York to our Children's Hospital where they will receive expert care from our team of physicians and staff.
The PICU also provides a 24-hour transport service jointly with Atlantic Ambulance. The dedicated pediatric ambulance provides a team consisting of a PICU resident physician, EMTs, specially trained PICU nurses and a respiratory therapist who are in constant contact with the PICU attending physician (both ground and air transport is available). The ambulance is child friendly and even has a DVD player for the children.
