Longtime Sussex County Podiatrist Named President of Medical Staff at Newton Medical Center

January  2014, Newton, NJ – Christian Robertozzi, DPM, FACFAOM, FASPS, a board-certified podiatrist who has treated the Sussex County community for three decades, was recently named the new president of medical staff at Newton Medical Center. As president, Robertozzi will represent Newton Medical Center’s medical staff of 375 physicians in hospital and professional matters, and is responsible for policy for the medical staff.

“With changes in health care both locally and nationally, this is an exciting time in Newton Medical Center’s history, and I look forward to working with the many skilled physicians on the medical staff to help make our communities the healthiest in the nation,” Robertozzi said. Dr. Robertozzi assumed the presidency following Donald Rubino, MD, a board-certified obstetrician who held the position for the past two years.

“Chris Robertozzi will bring a great degree of expertise and experience to the position of chair of the stellar medical staff at Newton Medical Center,” Rubino said. Dr. Robertozzi has served as vice-president of medical staff at Newton Medical Center for two years, in addition to several other positions at the hospital, including chief of the surgical department; chair of the Quality Improvement Committee; member of the Staff Leadership Committee; member of Medical Executive Committee; member of the Operating Room Committee; chair of the Surgical Executive Committee; and member of the Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation.

At age 14, Dr. Robertozzi started his career in healthcare by volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Orange, NJ, where his father was treated for his first heart attack. He completed his pre-medical school studies at Seton Hall University and received a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree in 1981 from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco. Returning to the East Coast, he completed a podiatric surgical program at Huntington General Hospital in Boston under the tutelage of the internationally known Robert Frykberg, DPM.

Upon completion of his residency program, he joined the Army Reserve.In 1983, Dr. Robertozzi started his own solo practice in Newton. In 2005, he formed a podiatry specialty group, Advanced Foot and Ankle Care, in Newton. He is board certified by both the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.  He has written several articles as well as a book chapter, and has lectured nationally on various podiatric subjects. Over the years, he has helped start two podiatric residency programs and has been involved in a third.

Throughout 30 years of practice, Dr. Robertozzi has received numerous awards from several organizations, including: the Stanley S. Bergen Jr., MD Award for Achievement in Medicine; Distinguished Service Citation from the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society (NJPMS); Podiatric Physician of the Year from the fund for Podiatric Medical Education; twice bestowed Podiatric Management Top 150 VIP DPMs; John Lucas, MD Emerging Physician Leader Award; The Carl R. (Bud) Luthman Spirit Award; and Sussex County Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Award. Dr. Robertozzi was involved with the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society (NJPMS), serving as president in 1993-1994. A member of the board of the American Podiatric Medical Association for 11 years, he also served as president in 2007-2008.

For 29 years, Newton has been the home to Dr. Robertozzi and his wife, Roberta, who have four children. Their two youngest children, Sarah and Jonathan were born at Newton Medical Center. For the last two years, Dr. Robertozzi has been involved with the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, giving back to this not-for-profit organization which has been instrumental more than once in helping him and his family. Since 2009, he has been involved with the YMCA Pioneering Healthier Communities Program.  The objective of the organization is to help America transform the way it works, both internally and externally, to support all health seekers and communities in their pursuit of well-being in spirit, mind and body.
