Atlantic Health System Hospitals Awarded Gold-Level Recognition In Federal Effort To Increase Organ And Tissue Donor Enrollment

November 12, 2015

November 12, 2015, Morristown, NJ – Atlantic Health System, one of the largest non-profit health care systems in New Jersey, today announced that all of its hospitals—Chilton Medical Center, Morristown Medical Center (which includes Goryeb Children’s Hospital), Newton Medical Center, and Overlook Medical Center — have been recognized with gold-level status by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) for their efforts to increase enrollment in the New Jersey state donor registry and educate patients about organ and tissue donation. The recognition is though HHS’s Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Workplace Partnership for Life campaign.

Atlantic Health System hospitals work closely with the NJ Sharing Network, a non-profit organization committed to saving and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation, to increase the number of people who are registered as organ and tissue donors and educate families and communities on the benefits of donation and registries.

“We are proud that our hospitals are recognized on a national level for the life-saving work we do each day on behalf of the thousands of people in need of organ and tissue donations — in our community and beyond,” said Brian A. Gragnolati, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of Atlantic Health System. “As health care professionals and educators in Atlantic Health System’s trusted network of caring, we have the responsibility each day to inform patients and families of their organ and tissue donation options, and will continue to work closely with NJ Sharing Network.”

“Atlantic Health System’s hospitals, and all of our hospital partners, are vital to our life-saving mission,” said Joe Roth, President and Chief Executive Officer of NJ Sharing Network. “With nearly 5,000 people in New Jersey in need of a transplant, the work that our hospital partners do to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation ultimately leads to more patients receiving transplants.”

The Atlantic Health System hospitals join 41 other hospitals in the NJ Sharing Network’s service area, which includes 14 counties in northern and central New Jersey, recognized by HRSA. Hospitals in the NJ Sharing Network service area received 39 gold, five silver, and one bronze recognition — the highest number of any Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) service area.

The Workplace Partnership for Life campaign unites advocates at hospitals with representatives from their OPOs, Donate Life America affiliates, and state and regional hospital associations. The 736 hospitals and transplant centers recognized in the campaign earned points for each activity implemented from August 2014 through April of this year. The campaign resulted in 350,000 donor registrations.About Atlantic Health System
