Atlantic Sports Health and Cybex Research Institute Commence Clinical Trial to Assess Effect of Exercise on Health-Related Quality of Life for Active Older Adults

November 2, 2015, Morristown, NJ – Atlantic Sports Health, New Jersey’s leader in the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries, today announced the commencement of a clinical trial designed to assess the physiologic, functional, and strength markers among active adults, ages 50-80, exercising on a Cybex Arc Trainer versus a standard treadmill. The study is being conducted in partnership with Cybex Research Institute, the research arm of Cybex, a leading manufacturer of premium exercise equipment.

Dr. Damion Martins, Director of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for Atlantic Health System, will serve as the primary investigator of the trial —“The Effects of Exercise Utilizing the Arc Trainer Institution: Atlantic Health System.”

“The hypothesis is that because of the added potential benefits of the Arc Trainer, a statistically significant difference in physiological, functional and strength markers will be found for those patients who use the Arc Trainer compared to those who use a treadmill, the gold standard of cardiovascular exercise” said Martins. “At Atlantic Sports Health, we want to test this theory to ensure we’re consistently providing our patients with quality care and sports health activities that are based on research-based outcomes.”

“The Cybex Research Institute is pleased to have Atlantic Sports Health as its partner in evaluating the effects of exercising on the Cybex Arc Trainer among active, older patients,” said Dr. Paul Juris, Chief Science Officer, Cybex International. “Collectively, we look forward to discoveries that will not only improve the quality of care of patients, but will also provide effective solutions to all those who seek a healthy, active lifestyle.”

To participate in the trial, people must:

  • Be cleared to participate by their physician
  • Be 50-80-years old
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5 to 34
  • Not be actively exercising (within the past six weeks), and
  • Have no history of significant lower extremity traumatic injury or symptomatic osteoarthritis that would prohibit the use of the machines

Enrolled subjects will participate in a four-month exercise program at Atlantic Sports Health, located at 111 Madison Avenue in Morristown. Once selected for the trial, participants will be divided into two groups: one group will exercise on the Cybex Arc Trainer and the other will exercise on a standard treadmill. Each group will exercise for a total of 120 minutes per week (divided into three, 40-minute sessions, with five minutes given for warm-up and cool down, respectively).

Potential benefits for study participants include weight loss, an increase in strength, cardio-respiratory fitness level, improved balance, a decrease in all-cause mortality as well as any other benefit of exercising. Participants will be assessed via bloodwork, balance testing, and surveys related to their health-related quality of life throughout the trial.
