Atlantic Health System Opens Pediatric Sports Medicine Program at Atlantic Sports Health

January 19, 2016

January 19, 2016, Morristown, NJ – Atlantic Health System, one of the largest non-profit health care systems in New Jersey, today announced it now offers comprehensive, specialized care for athletes of all ages through the opening of the Pediatric Sports Medicine Program at Atlantic Sports Health.

With its flagship at 111 Madison Avenue in Morristown, New Jersey, the Pediatric Sports Medicine Program will operate across all of Atlantic Health System’s facilities and also oversee sports rehabilitation and physical therapy in collaboration with non-Atlantic Health System centers.

“Atlantic Health System recognized the unique needs of young athletes and now services virtually every need — from the field, to the emergency room, to the clinic, to physical therapy, and back to the field,” said Tim Leier, MD, medical director of Pediatric Sports Medicine Program, and uniquely board-certified in pediatrics, pain medicine, and sports medicine. “Across the nation, athletes are training beginning at a younger age and at a more professional level. We want to make sure the medical and preventative care they receive complements the level of their training.”

“Atlantic Health System has seen a tremendous growth in the number of pediatric sports injuries and preventative visits over the past five years,” said Damion Martins, MD, Director of Atlantic Sports Health. “Parents are asking for more specialized, local care for their athletes that is on the same level we manage our professional athletes. Now, we are expanding our Trusted Network of Caring™ even further by using medical education and clinical research to drive quality and patient safety.”

The Pediatric Sports Medicine Program offers specialists trained in the young athlete’s unique needs, and equipment customizable for young patients—lower-dose radiation or diagnostic technology, smaller braces, or non-operative techniques appropriate for the maturing body.

“It’s important to remember we’re not dealing with small adults,” Leier said. “We’re dealing with growing anatomy, and ensuring these athletes have the proper medical care to support their training is critical to preventing injuries and supporting their longer-term athletic goals.”

Atlantic Sports Health has been recognized by the Atlantic and Optimus ACO as a designated Center of Excellence. Specialists from Atlantic Sports Health work directly with trainers, coaches, and team physicians to present seminars, conferences, and educational session about the latest in sports medicine advances.

The Pediatric Sports Medicine Program will work collaboratively with the subspecialists at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, to support ongoing care of pediatric and adolescent athletes that require more specialized care or surgical intervention.
