Newton Medical Center Recognized by Healthgrades as Top 10 Percent in Nation for General Surgery

October 17, 2017

Newton Medical Center also earns 5-star ratings for notable quality performance in five different medical conditions

October 17, 2017, Newton, NJ – Atlantic Health System’s Newton Medical Center today announced that it has been recognized among the top 10 percent in the nation for general surgery – as measured by volume-weighted performance – according to this year’s evaluation from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. The medical center also achieved 5-star ratings for its performance in five different medical conditions.

This achievement is part of new findings and data released today by Healthgrades and featured in the Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

Newton Medical Center received 5-star ratings for 2018 for treatment of the following conditions:

  • Heart failure
  • Esophageal/stomach surgeries
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Sepsis
  • Respiratory failure

A 5-star rating indicates that Newton Medical Center’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

“The recognition by Healthgrades is validation of Newton Medical Center’s commitment to delivering high quality care to the communities we serve,” said Joe DiPaolo, president of Newton Medical Center. “These achievements are a tribute to the hard work and contributions by our medical and hospital staff members and I couldn’t be more proud to ensure our patients that they are receiving the best treatment when they need it most.”

The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically among hospitals nationally, regionally and at the local level, and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes.

“Consumers place high value on information about hospital quality and use it to evaluate their choices for care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Hospitals that have achieved recognition for their quality outcomes prove their commitment to their patients and their community at large.”

About Healthgrades Methodology

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
