Overlook Medical Center Again Named One of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke, General Surgery and Critical Care in 2018 by Healthgrades

October 17, 2017

October 2017, Summit, NJ – Overlook Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, today announced it is recognized by consumer health care ratings group, Healthgrades®, as One of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for stroke care, general surgery and critical care.

Overlook is the only hospital in New Jersey to be named one of Healthgrades® America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care™ for five years in a row (2014-2018); the only hospital in NJ to be named one of Healthgrades® America’s 100 Best Hospitals for General Surgery™ for two years in a row (2017-2018); and the only hospital in NJ to be named One of Healthgrades® America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care™ for three years in a row (2016-2018).

Overlook was also recognized for high quality in numerous specialties, including bariatric surgery, pulmonary services, cardiac care, orthopedics, neuroscience, gastrointestinal, and critical care. Overlook was named among the top five percent in the Nation in five service lines. View the complete list of Overlook’s achievements in the Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation >

The achievements are part of findings released today in the Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally and at the local level, and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes.

“It is heartening to see the excellence in care at Overlook, made possible through the dedication of our care teams, to be recognized among the best in the nation,” said Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Medical Center. “Our communities can look to these recognitions, based on clinical data and quality metrics, as assurance that high quality care is close at hand.”

The clinical excellence recognition by Healthgrades have highlighted Overlook’s distinction for quality patient care in the state and region, including:

  • Home to the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute, and the state’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center, Overlook is the only hospital in NJ to achieve Healthgrades® Neurosciences Excellence Award™ for four years in a row (2015-2018), and is the recipient of the Healthgrades Stroke Care Excellence Award™ for nine years in a row (2010-2018)
  • Recipient of the Healthgrades® Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award for two years in a row (2017-2018), Overlook is also recognized for superior performance, and as being among the top five percent of hospitals evaluated for bariatric surgery for that same time period
  • Overlook Medical Center is the only hospital in NJ to achieve Healthgrades® Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award™ for two years in a row (2017-2018), and is among the top five percent in the nation for general GI surgery, and among the top 10 percent for overall GI services, each for that same time period
  • Overlook this year received Healthgrades 2018 Pulmonary Care Excellence Award, and is named among the top 10 percent in the nation for overall pulmonary services in 2018.

“Many consumers believe that hospital quality is standardized, though the reality is that clinical quality and outcomes at hospitals vary widely across the country,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Healthgrades, Chief Medical Officer. “The hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for a service line distinction have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality of care and can distinguish themselves to consumers seeking care at high-quality facilities.”

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
