Overlook Medical Center Expands Behavioral Health Access in New, Larger Space

January 25, 2019

January 25, 2019, Morristown, NJ – In an effort to expand access to behavioral health services in the area, Atlantic Behavioral Health at Overlook Medical Center has relocated its outpatient offices to a new, larger space at 2 Walnut Street in Summit.

Overlook’s outpatient behavioral health services were previously located in a modified residential building with 3,335 square feet of space on Beauvoir Avenue owned by the hospital.

The relocation to the Walnut street location, measuring 5,000 square feet which was previously occupied by a gym, will not only include more space, but a more adaptable facility in which to provide these services, which served about 900 individuals in 2018.

According to statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 43.8 million adults, or one in five adults in America experiences a mental illness – yet nearly 60 percent of these individuals didn’t receive mental health services in the previous year.

“In recent years, there has been a widening realization of the growing need for behavioral health in our communities,” said Peter Bolo, MD, chair psychiatry and behavioral health services at Overlook Medical Center. “As the majority of people who need these services receive them on an outpatient basis, moving to a larger, more modern and adaptable space will allow us to expand that access to those in our area.”

In addition to the current services provided at the Beauvoir Avenue location – traditional outpatient therapy, a mental health intensive outpatient program and a substance abuse program – the new location will provide an additional service, acute partial hospitalization, which provides longer-length treatment sessions.

The larger space at Walnut Street will allow the service to expand from one group room to three, as well as add a conference room and an expanded kitchen for patients, including new eating space. The Walnut Street location will also include more dedicated parking.
