Joseph Calello Melanoma Scholar, Dr. Charles Balch, to Present “The Surgical Management of Melanoma”

May 4, 2021 - Morristown, NJ – Atlantic Health System Cancer Care, in partnership with OncLive, invites health care professionals and others interested in the surgical management of melanoma to a virtual lecture by internationally known melanoma expert Charles M. Balch, MD, FACS, FASCO.  Dr. Balch is this year’s Joseph Calello Melanoma Scholar.  The free lecture and Q & A will be held on May 6, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. ET.  

The annual lecture is supported by the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center’s Joseph Calello Melanoma Research for the Cure Fund, which was created to honor physicians and to provide funding for melanoma education and research at Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center.

“Dr. Balch has led a distinguished career as a clinical and academic surgical oncologist for the past 41 years, and is a leading authority on both melanoma and breast cancer,” said Eric Whitman, MD, medical director, Atlantic Health System Cancer Care and founding director of the Atlantic Melanoma Center.  “We thank Dr. Balch for sharing his expertise and we are grateful to have generous philanthropic support of this annual lecture, which always sheds new light on advances in the treatment of melanoma.”

Dr. Balch serves as professor of surgery, Department of Surgical Oncology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas.  He has made significant contributions to laboratory research in tumor immunology and human T lymphocyte differentiation. He is author of more than 760 publications, which have been cited over 24,000 times in the biomedical literature (an average of 59 citations per article, h-index of 73). He has lectured in more than 40 countries and at most of the major academic centers in the United States.

Dr. Balch is the founding editor-in-chief of the Annals of Surgical Oncology, which is recognized as the world’s leading journal in its field, with over 11,000 surgical and library subscribers in 110 countries. He is also editor-in-chief for Patient Resource’s Cancer Guides. The publisher distributes more than one million Cancer Guides (with 21 different titles) to cancer patients each year.

Among Dr. Balch’s leadership positions have been executive vice president and CEO of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (2000-2005), and president and CEO of the City of Hope National Medical Center (1996-1999). At The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, from 1985-1996, Dr. Balch served as executive vice president for health affairs, vice president of hospital and clinics, and head of the Division of Surgery, among other positions.

The lecture is presented by Atlantic Health System’s Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, Atlantic Melanoma Center and the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center.

Founded by Dr. Eric Whitman, the Atlantic Melanoma Center is an internationally recognized program specializing in the treatment of melanoma, as well as other rare or aggressive skin cancers. The center has opened a new office in Overlook Medical Center’s MAC II building. Surgical oncologist Irene Epelboym Rossmer, MD, will help Dr. Whitman lead the melanoma treatment team at Overlook Medical Center. The Atlantic Melanoma Center’s care team includes surgical oncologists from Atlantic Surgical Oncology who are skilled in the latest techniques for treating melanoma and other complex skin cancers; pathology and dermatopathology specialists with extensive experience with high-risk skin cancers; medical oncology specialists; reconstructive or plastic surgeons to help restore function and appearance post-surgery; and skilled oncology nurses with specialized training in melanoma treatment management.
