Prenatal Classes

Atlantic Health System’s prenatal classes can help keep you healthy throughout your pregnancy and prepare you for the arrival of your newborn. Unless otherwise noted, fees are charged per couple.

Baby Basics

Fee: $60*
Babies don’t come with instructions. Get ahead of the game by learning how to care for your newborn before he or she is born. Topics include newborn characteristics and daily care; concerns about safety and illness; when to call the pediatrician; how to bathe, diaper and burp a baby; and how to care for the cord. Tips from the “Happiest Baby on the Block” on soothing fussy infants and helping them sleep longer are also included.  
* Grandparents may attend for an additional cost.

Breastfeeding

Fee: $50
Boost your confidence and get off to a good start nourishing your newborn by learning basic breastfeeding techniques from our lactation nurse educators. Topics include proper positioning for mother and baby, achieving a correct latch, common concerns about nutrition, the partner’s role, pumping and storage of breast milk, and returning to work.

Calling All Grandparents!

Fee: $20 per person or $35 per couple
Grandparents can learn about their role in the birth of a baby and new trends in child care. Topics include bathing and cord care, breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, car seat safety and safety in the home.

Prepared Childbirth

Fee: $200 for the 1 day intensive or $160 for the 3 week series
Expectant mothers and their partners can learn about the stages of childbirth, the role of the partner, coping and breathing techniques, and the postpartum period. A tour of the Chilton Medical Center Maternity Center is included. This class should be completed approximately four weeks before the baby’s due date.

Sibling Preparation

Fee: $40 per child; $25 for each additional sibling
Big brothers and big sisters play a very important role in welcoming a new member into the family. This class helps to ease children ages 3 through 10 into this new phase of their lives. Activities include a short video, a holding and diapering practice, and a tour of our maternity center.

ABCs of Going Home With Your Baby

Fee: $100
Topics include basic infant care, diapering, dressing, bathing, swaddling, holding, soothing, bottle feeding, when to call the baby’s doctor and how to manage with pets at home. Safety issues will also be addressed, including sleeping, cribs, car seats, baby products and baby-proofing your home.

Big Brother and Big Sister

Siblings can learn how to prepare for the arrival of a newborn brother or sister. Topics will include the importance of washing hands, why babies cry, ways siblings can help at home, how to play and bond with babies and fun time with crafts. Please have children bring their favorite stuff animal and a photo of themselves as a baby to the class. The program will conclude with a pizza party and big brother/big sister certificates. Breastfeeding Your Baby Part I – Getting Started

Fee: $50*
Topics include breast milk production, skin-to-skin care, positioning and latching, how long and often to feed, and how to tell if the baby is getting enough milk. Partners are welcome.
*Fee is waived for those who are attending any of our one-day child birth classes.

Breastfeeding Your Baby Part II – Beyond the First Weeks

Fee: $35
This class is for parents who have completed our “Breastfeeding Your Baby Part I” class or who are interested in learning how to pump their own breast milk. Topics include pumping and storing breast milk, maintaining milk supply and returning to work while continuing to breastfeed. Partners are welcome.
This class is held at Morristown Medical Center only.

Breastfeeding Support Group: “The First Weeks at Home and Beyond”

This classes offers an opportunity for breastfeeding mothers and their babies to engage in open discussion on how to breastfeed successfully. Topics include common issues that arise during feeding, returning to the workplace, and proper use of a breast pump and milk storage.

Breathing & Relaxation Class

Fee: $50
Learn breathing and relaxation techniques that you can use during labor and delivery for effective management of discomfort.
This class is held at Morristown Medical Center only.

Childbirth Mini Class: Your Baby's Birth

Fee: $75
Topics include the childbirth process, signs and stages of labor, and when to go to the hospital. A tour of our maternity center and a question-and-answer session with a nurse educator are included.

Epidural Online Training

View a web-based audio/video health education program from Emmi® regarding epidurals. Please contact Overlook Medical Center's Anesthesiology Department at 908-598-1500 for an access code to view this program. Once you obtain the code, click here and then click on “Watch an Emmi Program.”

Especially for Siblings

Fee: $50
Topics include what babies can do and how to safely hold them, ways older siblings can help their parents and tips for adults on easing the transition period for the big brother or sister. A short video and a tour of the maternity center are included. This program is recommended for parents with children ages 3 to 7.

Great Expectations: Prepared Childbirth and Infant Care for Parents Expecting Twins, Triplets or More

Fee: $100
Topics include how to care for more than one baby at a time, the last few days of pregnancy, signs and symptoms of pre-term labor, and vaginal and cesarean deliveries. A tour of our maternity center and practical advice from moms of the Twins n’ Triplets Mothers Club of Morris County is included.

Mindful Pregnancy and Birth

Fee: $200
Expectant couples will learn mindful meditation - a specific breathing and relaxation practice - which can help alleviate stress and anxiousness and can be used with medication to manage labor pain. This class includes most of the material covered in our Prepared Childbirth programs, including stages of labor, comfort measures, labor positions, partner support, medical interventions, choices in pain management and hands-on mindful meditation practice. “Calm Birth” and “Calm Mother” CDs and a tour of our maternity center are included.

Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal massages are used to alleviate many of the common physical and emotional discomforts of pregnancy, including back pain, leg cramps, fatigue, muscle tension and anxiety. A signed prescription from your doctor is necessary. For more information and to register, please call 973-971-6301.

Prenatal Aqua-Aerobics

Fee: $100 for six classes
Learn gentle movement exercises using water weights, while partaking in open discussions about pregnancy, birth and parenting. Classes are held at Atlantic Rehabilitation, located at 95 Mount Kemble Avenue, Morristown, NJ. For a schedule and to register, please call 973-971-5027.

Prepared Childbirth: Instruction for Labor and Birth

Fee: $150 three-day class; $200 two-day Sunday class; $250 one-day Saturday class
Topics include the birth process, such as signs and symptoms of labor, stages of labor, when to go to the hospital and what to bring with you; pain management strategies, such as breathing and relaxation techniques, comfort measures, massage, positioning, hydrotherapy, medication options and epidural anesthesia; hospital procedures; cesarean section; and physical and emotional recovery after birth. A tour of our maternity center and childbirth films are included. This class is also available in Spanish.

Breastfeeding

Fee: $40
Rely on our professional lactation nurse educators to give you the basic breastfeeding techniques needed to nourish your newborn. Learn about proper positioning for mother and baby as well as achieving a correct latch. Common concerns about nutrition, the partner’s role, pumping and storage of breast milk, and returning to work will be addressed in this class. We can help boost your confidence and get you off to a good start. This two-and-a-half hour class is offered on weeknights and weekends for your convenience.

Grandparents

Fee: $25
Grandparents have an opportunity to review the basics of newborn care and learn new techniques.

Newborn Parenting

Fee: $40
Babies don’t come with instructions. Get ahead of the game by learning how to care for your newborn before he or she is born. This four-and-a-half hour interactive course will cover newborn characteristics and daily care, as well as concerns about safety and illness and when to call the pediatrician. Hands-on activities, films and group discussion will help your instincts grow as you navigate the early weeks of your baby’s life. This is also a great course to refresh grandparents about what’s new or different in caring for a newborn.

Prepared Childbirth

Fee: $120
Covering the stages from conception to after the baby is born, this class will give you an understanding of the birth process as a healthy, normal experience. Join classes where certified childbirth educators guide you and your partner through pain management strategies such as relaxation techniques and breathing patterns and teach you comfort measures for birth. Learn about medical interventions, hospital procedures, medication options and Cesareans.

Sibling Preparation

Fee: $15 per child
Big brothers and big sisters play a very important role in welcoming a new member into the family. If you have a child between the ages of 3 and 10 and would like him or her to know more about this process, then join this 90-minute program. A short video, holding and diapering practice and a tour of the Newton Medical Center Maternity Center are just some of the activities included. Classes are held on Sunday afternoons.
