All Overlook Family Medicine practitioners need to know how to manage their patients' behavioral health needs as well as understand their own feelings and thoughts about the doctor-patient relationship. Our residents work with our behavioral science director to provide appropriate treatment and improve their skills. This training involves:
- Precepting cases
- Monitoring of patient encounters and providing feedback
- Small group (Balint) discussions of physician-patient relationships and challenging cases
- Monthly observation of a psychiatrist's consultation interview with one of our patients
- Teaching sessions led by patient educators
- Conferences covering a wide range of behavioral science topics
- Collaborative care of family medicine patients with the behavioral scientist, family medicine social worker and psychology and social work interns
- Teaching programs in medical humanities
- Clinical work and educational programs in ethics and palliative care
