Atlantic Health System hospitals again named among America’s Best, and score top rankings within NJ by Healthgrades

January 23, 2024

Morristown and Overlook among America’s 50 Best, Chilton Among America’s 250 Best; Overlook, ranked #1 in stroke and neuroscience, Newton, ranked #1 in pulmonary care, among in-state rankings

MORRISTOWN/SUMMIT/POMPTON PLAINS/NEWTON, NJ – JANUARY 23, 2024 – Three Atlantic Health System medical centers were named today among America’s Best Hospitals for 2024, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor – with Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center once again named among America’s 50 Best Hospitals, and Chilton Medical Center named among America’s 250 Best Hospitals.
All three medical centers, as well as Atlantic Health System’s Newton Medical Center, were also ranked highly among New Jersey hospitals in several key specialties, in Healthgrades 2024 state rankings.

Overlook ranked #1 in New Jersey for Stroke Care and Neurosciences, while Newton Medical Center ranked #1 in Pulmonary Care. Morristown Medical Center is ranked in the Top 3 in New Jersey for Cardiac Care, Coronary Intervention and Cardiology, and Chilton Medical Center is ranked within the Top 3 for Critical Care.

“These rankings further underscore the commitment to high quality care and safety that the teams at Morristown, Overlook, Chilton and Newton medical Centers have made,” said Scott Leighty, Executive Vice President, Chief Health System Officer for Atlantic Health System. “The talented team members, doctors and other clinicians at these medical centers are setting the standard not only for our organization, but also for health care facilities throughout the state and nation.”

Chilton’s second consecutive year (2023-2024) among the 250 Best Hospitals puts it in the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance across the most common conditions and procedures.

The inclusion of Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center (located in Summit, NJ) in the 50 Best Hospitals, for the ninth consecutive (2016-2024) and fifth (2020-2024) consecutive year respectively, put Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center among the top 1% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance across the most common conditions and procedures.

Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center are the only two hospitals in New Jersey named among America’s 50 Best Hospitals in 2024.

To determine the top hospitals for 2024, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for more than 30 conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Unlike other hospital studies, Healthgrades ratings are based solely on what matters most: patient outcomes. The 2024 Healthgrades analysis revealed significant variation in hospital performance, making it increasingly important to seek care at top-rated programs. From 2020-2022, if all hospitals, as a group, performed similarly to America’s 50 Best Hospitals, 176,124 lives could potentially have been saved.*

For its state rankings, Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on patient outcomes to determine the top-performing hospitals for specialty care in each of the 32 states assessed. Healthgrades’ 2024 analysis revealed that patients who seek care at a hospital with rankings in their condition or procedure have a better chance of a good outcome than if they were treated at a facility that is not #1 or among the top 3 in New Jersey. This widening performance gap highlights the importance of selecting a top-rated program.

“Healthgrades commends Atlantic Health System for its leadership and continued dedication to high quality care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “With two of America’s 50 Best Hospitals, Atlantic Health System is elevating the standard for quality care nationwide and ensuring superior outcomes for the patients in their community.”
