CMS Ratings Assist Patients and Caregivers in Finding Superior Health Care

Morristown, NJ—February 11, 2020—Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center is one of only two hospitals in New Jersey to earn the prestigious five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) Hospital Compare Program, the latest recognition for a hospital ranked number one in the state by U.S. News & World Report.

The CMS five-star rating, which is the highest possible, is the latest recognition for Morristown Medical Center, which is frequently acknowledged for its quality care by various national media and leading watchdog organizations, including Newsweek, Healthgrades, and Leapfrog. The hospital is regularly lauded for cardiology and heart surgery, as well as orthopedics and oncology.

“At Morristown Medical Center, we are continuously exploring new ways of caring for our patients to ensure positive outcomes and delivering extraordinary caring in our safe, healing environment. We are proud of the fact that we have been consistently recognized for our commitment to quality and patient safety,” said Trish O’Keefe, Ph.D., RN, president, Morristown Medical Center, vice president, Atlantic Health System. “This sustained recognition reflects the deep commitment to excellence made to each and every patient by our physicians, nurses and dedicated caregivers.”

CMS, a federal agency that regulates and oversees the nation’s hospitals, employs this star-rating system to help patients and caregivers find institutions with the best care. Of the 4,586 hospitals included in the star ratings, just 407 scored five stars. Two other Atlantic Health System hospitals, Newton Medical Center and Summit’s Overlook Medical Center, attained four-star ratings.

The overall CMS hospital rating summarizes a variety of quality measures reflecting common conditions that many hospitals, like Morristown and others, treat. Key quality measures include mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. The star rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to hospitals across the country.
