During the emergency medicine rotation, the student will present directly to attending physicians.
Key features of the emergency medicine rotation also include:
- Attending conferences on Tuesdays from 7:00am to Noon
- Meetings with program directors to discuss rotation and emergency medicine opportunities
- Discussing and facilitating patient care through one-on-one interaction with attending physicians in acute trauma, fast track and pediatric emergency medicine
- Attending morning report and giving a brief presentation on a patient encounter
- Reading from the selected readings given at the beginning of the rotation
- Completing rotation shift logs, patient logs, procedure logs and both entry and exit questionnaires
- Completing clinical evaluation cards after each shift
- Following charting guidelines
- Utilizing the ultrasound machine in the department alongside fellowship-trained ultrasonographers
Students wishing to enhance their rotation may choose to observe autopsies or ride with the Mobile Intensive Care Unit to experience emergency care provided in the field. We strongly encourage students to gain additional exposure beyond requirements through working alongside experts in pediatric emergency medicine, emergency medicine services and emergency medicine ultrasound,.
Supervision in the Emergency Department (ED)
Residents and medical students in the emergency department are closely supervised. Prospective medical students interested in supervision details in the ED, please contact our residency coordinator.
Dress Code
Professional appearance is important in establishing rapid rapport with patients and colleagues in the ED. Students must adhere to the following dress code when they are on duty:
- Shirt and tie for men; equivalent for women
- Scrubs are permitted, but only as a matching top and bottom worn with a white lab coat
- An extra white lab coat must be available at all times
- Soiled lab coats must be replaced immediately
- Jeans, shorts and open-toe shoes are not permitted
Charting
Charting is very important for high quality patient care. During orientation and the first few shifts in the ED, medical students will be instructed in the use of computer template medical charting and must adhere to our guidelines. Prospective medical students interested in charting guidelines in the ED, please contact our residency coordinator.
Accepted Students
Before your rotation begins, our program coordinator will email you detailed instructions regarding orientation location and time. It is usually held the first Monday of your rotation at 2:00pm in the Emergency Medicine Conference Room, Level C, unless otherwise stated.
