Successful completion of all 3rd year clerkships

Description

The nephrology elective familiarizes 4th year medical students with the workup and treatment of patients with renal diseases. 

Learning Experience

Students will:

  • Round daily in the hospital and dialysis unit with an attending nephrologist, having direct involvement in consultations and management of hospitalized and outpatient nephrology patients
  • Be acquainted with dialysis modalities (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis)
  • Develop an approach to evaluating acute and chronic renal dysfunction, emphasizing electrolyte disturbances and acid-based disorders

Goals & Objectives

  • To become familiar with the evaluation and treatment of patients with acute and chronic renal disease
  • To be more adept with determining acid-based disturbances
  • To learn dialysis modalities: indications, advantages, and disadvantages to the different modalities

Feedback & Evaluation

The attending preceptor will provide consistent written evaluations and will offer feedback throughout the rotation. A final, written evaluation will be completed at the end of the rotation.
